"Seit 1997 wird an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin ein Dokumentenserver für die Publikation wissenschaftlicher Arbeiten betrieben: http://edoc.huberlin.de. Grundlegende Entwicklungsarbeiten wurden durch das HSP III-Projekt "Digitale Dissertationen" in enger Kooperation mit dem DFG-Projekt "Dissertationen Online" geleistet. Dabei wurden alle Voraussetzungen geschaffen, die für ein gesichertes Publikationsverfahren erforderlich sind, wie die Bereitstellung von Formatvorlagen und Anleitungen für die Autoren, die Konvertierung der Dokumente in ein auf SGML basierendes Dateiformat zum Zweck der Langzeitarchivierung und strukturierten Recherchierbarkeit, die Sicherung der Authentizität und Integrität der Dokumente durch die Vergabe elektronischer Signaturen und Zeitstempel, die Etablierung eines Workflows für alle am Publikationsprozess beteiligten Mitarbeiter. Nach der Beendigung des Projektes "Digitale Dissertationen" wird der Betrieb des Dokumentenservers seit Anfang 2001 als festes, gemeinsames Angebot von Rechenzentrum und Universitätsbibliothek der Humboldt-Universität fortgeführt, wobei die Betreuung nunmehr durch Stammpersonal beider Einrichtungen erfolgt. Das Angebot wird trotz der an die Autoren gestellten hohen Anforderungen - die Verwendung vorgegebener Formatvorlagen und die strukturierte Aufbereitung der Arbeiten sind zwingend vorgeschrieben - von den Promovenden gut angenommen: Von ca. 400 pro Jahr an der HumboldtUniversität geschriebenen Dissertationen wird etwa ein Viertel über den Dokumentenserver elektronisch publiziert. Die Autoren erhalten eine intensive und qualifizierte Unterstützung, welche von der Bereitstellung von Informationsmaterial über Kurse zur Verwendung einer Word-Dokumentvorlage, telefonischem und E-Mail-Support bis zur persönlichen Beratung vor Ort reicht. Konzentrierte sich die Publikation bisher im Wesentlichen auf Dissertationen und Habilitationsschriften, so soll diese gemäß den auf der Abschlusstagung des Projektes "Dissertationen Online" gegebenen Empfehlungen in Zukunft verstärkt auf weitere wissenschaftliche Arbeiten ausgedehnt werden."
