- Abstract
- Feature on OCLC's SiteSearch suite of software, first introduced in 1992, and how it is helping over 250 libraries integrate and manage their electronic library collections. Describes the new features of version 4.0, released in Apr 1997, which include a new interface, Java based architecture, and an online documentation and training site. Gives an account of how Java is helping the Georgia Library Learning Online (GALILEO) project to keep pace on the WWW; the use of SiteSearch by libraries to customize their interface to electronic resources; and gives details of Project Athena (Assessing Technological Horizons to Educate the Nashville Area), which is using OCLC SiteSearch to allow area library users to search the holdings of public and university libraries simultaneously

- Abstract
- The Wolverhampton Web Library (WWLib) is a WWW search engine that provides access to UK based information. The experimental version developed in 1995, was a success but highlighted the need for a much higher degree of automation. An interesting feature of the experimental WWLib was that it organised information according to DDC. Discusses the advantages of classification and describes the automatic classifier that is being developed in Java as part of the new, fully automated WWLib

- Abstract
- Introductory paper in an issue devoted to theory and foundation of information retrieval. There are too many records to be handled rationally and comfortably. Too much is badly written or repeats what has been adequately stated before. Automated retrieval systems may help society to cope with some information problems, but truly effective systems could help much more. This issue deals (through an examination of the theory and foundations of information retrieval) with how effective information retrieval systems could be designed and discusses important issues of data retrieval

- As the popularity of the Internet grows, more users are able to ask questions electronically. Based on experiences at the Maryland University at Baltimore, Health Sciences Library, emphasizes implications for the manager who establishes a reference electronic mail service. Considers the advantages and disadvantages of electronic reference services, what questions must e considered before establishing the services, what problems must be anticipated and what staffing is appropriate. - Abstract
- The method of integrating rules for nonbook materials with those for print materials in AACR2 is examined to see how well nonbook materials are handled and whether the treatment of print materials is affected. Both choice of entry rules and rules for description are examined to see whether their provisions are in accordance with the needs of users of these materials, and/or the patterns of publication and identification of these materials. Areas needing further research are identified.

- Abstract
- Investigates whether public libraries are capable of providing a basic science enquiry service. Examines the range of environmental enquiries handled by 5 participating libraries as part of their everyday business. During the study some 110 detailed enquirues were recorded: less than 20% of these concerned local environmental questions; the rest related to environmental queries at the national or global level. The 3 most popular topics were: pollution, names and addresses of environmental organizations and people and recycling. Enquirers were evenly split between school attenders and adults. Most of the enquiries could be answered by making use of the resources already available in the library; no more than 10% had to be referred elsewhere for an answer

- Abstract
- Describes a 4-year project to convert the British Library catalogue to machine-readable form. After a brief description of the catalogue and some of its oddities and idiosyncrasies, discusses how the conversion was managed, from the inception of the project through to near-completion in 1991. Identifies 3 stages: deciding to convert, the fundamental principles of the conversion, and drawing up the specification and signing the contract; setting up and implementing the project; and managing the ongoing conversion process and planning for the post-capture record processing and handling. Concludes with a checklist of do's and don'ts for those contemplating retrospective conversion of a catalogue which cannot be handled by conventional means

- Abstract
- Describes the comparative approach to system evaluation used in this research project which delegated the administartion of an online retrieval test to an experimental online catalogue to produce data for evaluating the effectiveness of a new subject access design. Describes the methods enlisted to sort out problem test administration, e.g. to identify out-of-scope queries, incomplete system administration, and suspect post-search questionnaire responses. Covers how w the researchers handled problem search administrations and what actions they would use to reduce or eliminate the occurrence of such administrations in future online retrieval tests that delegate control of retrieval tests to online systems

- Abstract
- Geographic indexing is usually handled in the same way as other indexing; that is, through the use of controlled vocabulary, often in a hierarchical arrangement from broad region (such as continent) to smaller regions (such as country, county, geologic province, topographic feature, city). But a geographic location can also be described by map reference points (geocoding), such as a set of latitudes and longitudes. This spatial referencing and the use of computer graphic display has many advantages over word-based indexing. Examples of the variation of geographic indexing terminology for on-line bibliographic records are given.

- Abstract
- Introduces a new 'How do they do that?' feature dedicated to explaining Web developer tools. Begins with CGIs, using the example of Web site visitor counters to explain key concepts. Provides background on how the Web works, with a high level overview of protocol stacks, TCP/IP, HTTP and HTML. Contrasts the differences between programs and scripts, scripts being executable files that are not compiled. The addition of CGI scripts to a Web server can pose security risks if not handled properly. The Web offers many downloadable CGI scripts for basic functions, including counters, timers, guest books, image maps, and server-push animations

- Abstract
- This article provides a background for the change of the classification system for Chinese language materials at an academic library. It describes how the decision was made; how choices on partial reclassification or total reclassification were made; and how matters such as project planning, implementation, and vision for the future are being handled. It is hoped that the authors' experience can offer tips for other libraries contemplating reclassification projects. By making use of the Chinese Library Classification (CLC) numbers from various sources in Mainland China, the authors envisage increased cataloging efficiency and cost saving in the long run.

- Abstract
- Presents a Guided tour system for the WWW, called Ariadne, which implements the ideas of trails and guided tours, originating from the hypertext field. Ariadne appears as a Java applet to the user and it stores guided tours in a database format separated from the WWW documents included in the tour. Itd main advantages are: an independent user interface which does not affect the layout of the documents being part of the tour, branching tours where the user may follow alternative routes, composition of existing tours into aggregate tours, overview map with indication of which parts of a tour have been visited an support for getting back on track. Ariadne is available as a research prototype, and it has been tested among a group of university students as well as casual users on the Internet
