    Abstract
Reports agreements between Ovid Technologies and 5 publishing companies (Blackwell Science, Lippincott-Raven, Munksgaard, Plenum, Willams and Wilkins) to secure the rights to the full text over 400 leading periodicals. Once the periodicals are loaded on Ovid they will be linked with other fulltext electronic periodicals to bibliographic databases to produce a web of related documents and threaded information. Concludes with notes on the Ovid Java Client graphic user interface, which offers increased speeds of searching the WWW

    Abstract
The roles of academic librarians are gradually being redefined so that an increasing number of library tasks are being assigned to paraprofessionals and other staff; and the increasing complexity of referecne services has given rise to the need for more training, knowledge and skills. In the 1990s both traditional and innovative information formats must now ne managed simultaneously, making the head of reference's responsibilities increasingly complex and diverse. Discusses the following aspects of the roles of the reference manager: management of reference personnel; implementation and adaption of new technologies while maintaing traditional means of information access; and leadership and planning for anticipated changes in the future

    Abstract
Feature on OCLC's SiteSearch suite of software, first introduced in 1992, and how it is helping over 250 libraries integrate and manage their electronic library collections. Describes the new features of version 4.0, released in Apr 1997, which include a new interface, Java based architecture, and an online documentation and training site. Gives an account of how Java is helping the Georgia Library Learning Online (GALILEO) project to keep pace on the WWW; the use of SiteSearch by libraries to customize their interface to electronic resources; and gives details of Project Athena (Assessing Technological Horizons to Educate the Nashville Area), which is using OCLC SiteSearch to allow area library users to search the holdings of public and university libraries simultaneously

    Abstract
The Wolverhampton Web Library (WWLib) is a WWW search engine that provides access to UK based information. The experimental version developed in 1995, was a success but highlighted the need for a much higher degree of automation. An interesting feature of the experimental WWLib was that it organised information according to DDC. Discusses the advantages of classification and describes the automatic classifier that is being developed in Java as part of the new, fully automated WWLib

    Abstract
Written by an international team of experts (including Jeremy Adelman, Lorraine Daston, Devin Fitzgerald, John-Paul Ghobrial, Lisa Gitelman, Earle Havens, Randolph C. Head, Niv Horesh, Sarah Igo, Richard R. John, Lauren Kassell, Pamela Long, Erin McGuirl, David McKitterick, Elias Muhanna, Thomas S. Mullaney, Carla Nappi, Craig Robertson, Daniel Rosenberg, Neil Safier, Haun Saussy, Will Slauter, Jacob Soll, Heidi Tworek, Siva Vaidhyanathan, Alexandra Walsham), the book's inspired and original long- and short-form contributions reconstruct the rise of human approaches to creating, managing, and sharing facts and knowledge. Thirteen full-length chapters discuss the role of information in pivotal epochs and regions, with chief emphasis on Europe and North America, but also substantive treatment of other parts of the world as well as current global interconnections. More than 100 alphabetical entries follow, focusing on specific tools, methods, and concepts?from ancient coins to the office memo, and censorship to plagiarism. The result is a wide-ranging, deeply immersive collection that will appeal to anyone drawn to the story behind our modern mania for an informed existence.

    Abstract
Describes current use of hypermedia, what users find difficult and the extent to which they cope with it, and summarises the implications of these findings for authors. The experience which information professionals have in understanding users' needs, in analysing and organizing information and in presenting it in appropriate forms gives them a head start in getting the most out of hypermedia to enhance their own value and experience by creating new and useful value-added products

    Abstract
Suggests that when conflicting philosophies of service exist within an academic reference department, users may receive various levels of service from different users, which may be disappointing or confusing. In order to provide service which is consistent in nature and scope, librarians need to embrace the same or very similar service philosophy, and the head of the department should lead in this endeavour. Argues that this philosophy should be based on the department's shared values, which need in turn to be articulated

    Abstract
Regina Romano Reynolds discusses her career in serials librarianship, particularly her roles as head of the National Serials Data Program at the Library of Congress and as a major participant in national and international revision of serials cataloging rules. Topics covered include the ISSN Network, AACR2 revision to accommodate seriality, international harmonization of cataloging rules and standards, the value of library catalogs in the world of information, effective communication, "metaloging," and changes in cataloging practice that Reynolds would like to see, especially with regard to cataloging taking "a less parochial view."

    Abstract
At Vanderbilt University Library attempts to coordinate pre-order and pre-cataloging OCLC searching guidelines were only partially successful until the Verification Unit became part of the Monographic Services (i.e., cataloging) Department. With Verification's reporting to the head of cataloging and with the department head's more immediate awareness of verification procedures, closer coordination between verification and cataloging followed quickly. In two years, production in the LC Copy Catalog Unit increased 104%.

    Abstract
This paper introduces a grammar for Arabic nominal sentences written in the formalism of Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG). This grammar covers simple Arabic nominal sentences, though the same approach can be extended to cover other types of Arabic nominal sentences. The formalization has been implemented using the Linguistic Knowledge Building (LKB) system.

    Abstract
Presents a Guided tour system for the WWW, called Ariadne, which implements the ideas of trails and guided tours, originating from the hypertext field. Ariadne appears as a Java applet to the user and it stores guided tours in a database format separated from the WWW documents included in the tour. Itd main advantages are: an independent user interface which does not affect the layout of the documents being part of the tour, branching tours where the user may follow alternative routes, composition of existing tours into aggregate tours, overview map with indication of which parts of a tour have been visited an support for getting back on track. Ariadne is available as a research prototype, and it has been tested among a group of university students as well as casual users on the Internet
