    Abstract
Offers useful advice to children's librarians in dealing with reference enquiries originating in homework questions. Stresses the important role of the librarians in helping users to learn how to fing things out for themselves rather than simply supply a quick answer and notes that helping young users with homework is an opportunity to educate parents on the proper use of the public library

    Abstract
Reviews the history of the UDC against the background of the 50th anniversary of the British Standard BS1000 series, the English editions of the UDC, and the completion of the UDC database created by the UDC Consortium in The Hague. Based on the machine readable text database, for the first edition of BS1000M (1985) as the starting point, the new UDC database will be an indispensable tool for managing and maintaining the classification scheme both by helping to eliminate the problems of the past, such as ambiguities and discrepancies between editions, and by improving the efficiency of revision and updating; making it easy to search for existing coverage of any concept, and helping to avoid inadvertent duplication

    Abstract
Looks at the role which information and referral agencies can play in helping victims of domestic violence. After profiling the typical battered woman and describing the life cycle of domestic violence, discusses measures by which referral workers can help, such as assuring the woman's immediate safety, assisting her in obtaining a restraining order, and directing her to an appropriate shelter or refuge. Examines the operations of shelters in some detail, and makes observations on obtaining help for the batterers themselves. Concludes with details of how referral workers can cope with the internal stresses which working with batterers and battering victimes can create

    Abstract
Feature on OCLC's SiteSearch suite of software, first introduced in 1992, and how it is helping over 250 libraries integrate and manage their electronic library collections. Describes the new features of version 4.0, released in Apr 1997, which include a new interface, Java based architecture, and an online documentation and training site. Gives an account of how Java is helping the Georgia Library Learning Online (GALILEO) project to keep pace on the WWW; the use of SiteSearch by libraries to customize their interface to electronic resources; and gives details of Project Athena (Assessing Technological Horizons to Educate the Nashville Area), which is using OCLC SiteSearch to allow area library users to search the holdings of public and university libraries simultaneously

    Abstract
Knowledge Organization Systems (KOS) as networks of knowledge have the potential to inform AI operations. This paper explores natural language processing and machine learning in the context of KOS and Helping Interdisciplinary Vocabulary Engineering (HIVE) technology. The paper presents three use cases: HIVE and Historical Knowledge Networks, HIVE for Materials Science (HIVE-4-MAT), and Using HIVE to Enhance and Explore Medical Ontologies. The background section reviews AI foundations, while the use cases provide a frame of reference for discussing current progress and implications of connecting KOS to AI in digital resource collections.

    Abstract
States that the search facilities offered by CD-ROM are not always learnt easily by users. It takes a number of years of extensive experience to become a proficient online searcher. The number of users searching simultaneously is limited by the number of terminals. Additional staff are needed for helping although some uses acquainted with the system do explain it to their friends

    Abstract
The US federal government, schools and employers are currently examining the potential role of CD-ROM databases in helping disabled people. Considers what constitute accessible applications and suggests that they be tested using existing adaptive devices. Recommends 2 types of adaptive hardware and software: a product for bild people, to determine if screen review packages can make the packages talk; and a product for physically handicapped people

    Abstract
Describes the Seymour project being run by libraries in Maryland which aims to bring the benefits of electronic information to all state residents by 2000. Describes how the telecommunications infrastructure will be developed. The services offered will include: searching for books, articles, facts, helping agencies and government and other information. The service will also act as a gateway to the Internet network. Shows how the project is being set up and organized. Discusses policy issues and challenges poses by the project

    Abstract
Explores the idea that virtual books will send printed books into obsolescnece within the next decade giving rise to either book museums or to virtual libraries. The evidence suggestss that because librarians value confidentiality, intellectual freedom, users' ability to find information independently, awareness of their role in the community, literacy and continuing professional education, their educational role in helping users to navigate collections of books will not become redundant with the growth of electronic resources. Explores these trends in an art library context focusing on the indispensible nature of the art librarian

    Abstract
Constructivism palces emphasis on helping learners create or modify internal models on which to build knowledge and foster experiences which facilitate further knowledge construction. An understanding of models and the use of analogy can be a tool to help facilitate understanding and knowledge construction in new learning environemnts such as the Internet

    Abstract
A growing demand for digital documents is redefining the meaning of document delivery and repositioning the role it plays in libraries. Other trends helping to bring about these changes include the increasing sophistication of information technologies, new library philosophies and the prevalence of information 'pointers' such as bibliographic databases. Studies of delivery system usage have shown digital documents can meet a variety of research needs. Criteria for evaluating document delivery systems and services include consistency, dependability, rapid turnaround and ease of integration

    Abstract
Seeks to explore whether or not the basic role of reference librarians, that of helping prople find the information they seek, will change in the future. 3 trends currently affecting libraries are discussed and their potential impact on the future role of reference librarians assessed. These are: economic trends; technological trends; and demographic trends

    Abstract
Asserts that although the library landscape may shift a great deal, reference librarians will still be in the business of negotiating with users and helping them find what they need. The electronic environment may cause a shift in the tools librarians use and the speed in which they change; it may also allow them to look more closely at their users' needs and deliver what they request more quickly and in a wider variety of forms
