- Abstract
- A new design for the DDC allows for display of the schedules and indexes in a hypertextual browser which was originally designed for the more conventional thesaurus with BT-NT, RT and USE-UF relations. Features of the DDC which approxumate those relations and the presentation of the rich vocabulary found in the hierarchical structure, captions, index entries and notes are represented for the library user's perusal and choice before searching a library's holdings. By dragging and dropping parts from such a display into a search window, the search for bibliographic items can begin and revised painlessly. Information such as class numbers of subject headings for retrieved items can be dragged and dropped into the searchw indow of the Visual Dewey display window as it suits the user to review vocabulary or revise the search results. This seamless to-ing and fro-ing allows for a truly interactive and spontaneous search environment, with maximum assistance at point of need. 'File folders' exist for saving any Visual Dewey information, any retrieved items, etc.

- Abstract
- Editors of long-standing classifications have to adopt their schemes to totally different circumstances from those they were originally designed to suit. The need to retrieve information accurately in an online environment and a world dominated by the Internet is vital and contrasts with the basic linear approach for which these classifications were intended. The latter need still has to be satisfied, so ways of achieving both goals must be explored. The need for greater synthesis, clearly defined factes, with distinctive notation and a closely adhered to citation order is essential. An expressive notation is attractive in an online environmen. Modern educational approaches make traditional structures meaningless and the current economic climate and expense of developing new publication formats is reducing revision budgets. Co-operation between editors and the use of one scheme, e.g. DDC, as a switching language between other schemes, e.g., UDC, thesauri and subject headings lists are one way forward. Existing co-operative projects and future plans between the editors of DDC, UDC and BC2 are discussed and the complementing of classification by a thesaurus is recommended

- Abstract
- In 2003, OCLC published Dewey Decimal Classification and Relative Index, Edition 22 (DDC 22), in print and Web versions. The changes and updates in the new edition reflect a modern view of knowledge structures and address the general needs of Dewey users. The content of DDC 22 has been shaped by a number of social, geopolitical, and technical trends. The World Wide Web has provided a vehicle for more frequent distribution of updates to the DDC, and a medium for direct communication with Dewey users around the world. In addition to updating the system itself, other strategies are needed to accommodate the needs of the global Dewey user community. Translation of the system is one approach; another is mapping. Mapping terminology to the DDC is a strategy for supporting effective local implementation of the system while maintaining the internal cohesiveness of the DDC. This paper explores the usefulness of mapping terminology from English-language general subject headings lists produced outside the U.S.

- Abstract
- Citation-chasing is proposed as a method of discovering additional terms to enhance subjectsearch retrieval. Subjects attached to OCLC records for cited works are compared to those attached to original citing sources. Citing sources were produced via a subject-list search in a library catalog using the LCSH "Language and languages-Origin." A subject-search was employed to avoid subjectivity in choosing sources. References from the sources were searched in OCLC where applicable, and the subject headings were retrieved. The subjects were ranked by citation-frequency and tiered into 3 groups in a Bradford-like distribution. Highly cited subjects were produced that were not revealed through the original search. A difference in relative importance among the subjects was also revealed. Broad extra-linguistic topics like evolution are more prominent than specific linguistic topics like phonology. There are exceptions, which appear somewhat predictable by the amount of imbalance in citation-representation among the 2 sources. Citation leaders were also produced for authors and secondary-source titles.

- Abstract
- Spansih subject headings can be used when searching ILLINET Online. Although Spanish language Bilindex subject headings have been available for more than a decade, the library literature has virtually ignored their existence. Provides a brief introduction to these headings, identifies several Illinois libraries which currently assign them, and presents some examples. Surveys various prospects and problems associated with their use

- Abstract
- Sears List of Subject Headings (Miller and McCarthy 2010), first published in 1923, is now in its 20th edition. Like most subject headings lists, apart from being a list of preferred (and non-preferred) headings, it also provides patterns, clear instructions, and examples for coining new subject headings not explicitly listed. Key headings form a vital part of the system of coining new headings. It is proposed that more key headings should be designated. Some candidate headings are described. One far-reaching provision seems to be the use of a subdivision of a preferred heading with all of its NTs. Thus, every preferred heading is a potential key heading for all of its NTs. This proposal works on the principle that what is true of a class is true of its narrower classes of all types. Applying this principle will enormously enhance the capacity of the List without adding even an iota to its text and size.
