- Abstract
- The present paper analyzes the changes that occurred to a set of Web pages related to "informetrics" over a period of 5 years between June 1998 and June 2003. Four times during this time span, in 1998,1999, 2002, and 2003, we monitored previously located pages and searched for new ones related to the topic. Thus, we were able to study the growth of the topic, white analyzing the rates of change and disappearance. The results indicate that modification, disappearance, and resurfacing cannot be ignored when studying the structure and development of the Web.

- Abstract
- It is suggested that, in addition to data, information and knowledge, the information sciences should focus on understanding, understood as a higher-order knowledge, with coherent and explanatory potential. The limited ways in which understanding has been addressed in the design of information systems, in studies of information behaviour, in formulations of information literacy and in impact studies are briefly reviewed, and future prospects considered. The paper is an extended version of a keynote presentation given at the i3 conference in June 2015.

- Abstract
- In spite of its difficulty, communication between philosophy and classification - and more precisely between ontological research and knowledge organization - is conceptually very intriguing, and implies a lot of problems for scientific research. One of these, which is the object of discussion of this paper, is the theme of the "something" (the matter) of classification. After a quick examination of the debate around the alternative between classification of documents and of entities, the paper shows how every kind of rigorous classification must be supported by an ontology. An example of an ontological approach to knowledge classification is the implementation of the theory of levels of reality. Nicolai Hartmann's idea of a stratification of the real world is individuated as a robust support to the aim. However a theory of levels needs a set of general categories, common for all the levels. The aim of exploring the fundamental or top categories is pursued through a combination of the critical ontology elaborated by Hartmann and some notions from General System Theory.

- Abstract
- Report of a programme on Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) at the American Library Association Conference, Chicago, June 1995. Contributions from various constituencies included the following points: a comparison between EDI developments in the USA and Europe; the importance and long-term benefits of EDI for both librarians and agents; the need for libraries to take a leadership position with regard to EDI implementation to ensure that policies and procedures are acceptable; the fact that EDI in the information services field in the UK is widely accepted by libraries, agents and system vendors; the impact of EDI implementation in industry; the role of the library systems vendors in introducing EDI; and the view that while EDIcertainly offers many efficiencies and economies of scale, the are many hurdles to be faced by library managers before it becomes a reality

- Abstract
- A survey was conducted during 1987 to identify how online catalog users interact with various aspects of the catalog's authority control structure. Questionnaires were sent to major online catalog system vendors and to selected university libraries and networks known to have developed in-house online catalogs; additional copies were distributed to ACIG meeting participants during the ALA conference in San Francisco, June 1987. Twenty-one usable responses were received, twelve describing commercially available systems and nine from lacally developed systems.
