    Abstract
The main objective of the proposed high-level 'Visual Repository Definition Language' is to anbale advanced Web presentation of large amounts of exisitng heterogeneous information. Statements of the language serve to describe the desired structure of information repositories, which are composed of metadata entities encapsulating the original data. Such approach helps to to avoid the usual relocation and restructuring of data that occurs when providing Web access to it. The language has been designed to be useful even for inexperienced programmers. Its applicability is demonstrated by a real example, creating a repository of judicial opinions from publicly available raw data

    Abstract
This paper describes a joint research of the Law School (Direito Rio) and the Applied Math School (EMAp) of the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV), Brazil to analyze information from judicial activities in some of the Brazilian courts. The data for the study included the entire collection of judicial decisions from 1988 to the present. The idea was to identify bottlenecks in the judicial processes at the STF.

    Abstract
Empirical research on basic components of American judicial opinions has only scratched the surface. Lack of sufficient legal experts and adequate computational resources are but two reasons responsible for this deficiency. Aided by a team of expert attorney-editors, we have undertaken a three-phase study to uncover fundamental components of judicial opinions found in American case law. We hypothesized that after years of working closely with thousands of judicial opinions, expert attorneys would develop a refined and internalized schema of the content and structure of legal cases. In this study participants were permitted to describe both concept-related and format-related components. The resultant components are reported on in this paper. Additional experiments currently underway further validate and refine this set of components and apply them to new search paradigms

    Abstract
The system is available both in print and online versions. Names a few new subject headings in areas like science, technology, engineering and medicine (STEM). In this edition, there are a total of 1,600 new headings making it a total of 12,000+ preferred headings meant for subject access in small and medium sized libraries. This unprecedented increase of about 1,600 headings is mostly due the complete incorporation of the Canadian Sears last published independently in 2006. Also critically examines inconsistencies in a few headings. Concludes to say the new edition in resplendent, hard binding maintains its stellar reputation of a handy list of general subject headings both for applications and a teaching resource.

    Abstract
The statutes themselves are not the only basis for deciding whether an intellectual property rights infringement has occurred. Ethical judgments can also influence judicial rulings. This column looks at three issues of intellectual property ethics: the nature of the property, written guidelines for behavior, and enforcement mechanisms. For most active infringers digital property seems unreal, the rules ambiguous, and the enforcement statistically unlikely.

    Abstract
Library users' research interests and needs are becoming increasingly interdisciplinary. This type of research presents searchers with obstacles that differ from disciplinary research. Using the information search process (ISP) developed by Carol C. Kuhlthau as a theoretical model, this study compares the impact of manual and online search methods on the interdisciplinary search task in terms of the relevance of retrieved items, user effort, user satisfaction, user confidence and future use. This comparative investigation examines two senior-level journalism classes researching judicial decisions related to the mass media. One class used printed legal reference sources; the other class used LEXIS, a full-text legal database. The result of this study indicate that online search methods are more effective than manual search methods when users are working outside their areas of specialization

    Abstract
The history of the Library of Congress Subject Headings is traced, from its beginnings with the implementation of a dictionary catalog at the Library of Congress in 1898 to the present day. The author describes the most significant changes which have occurred in LCSH policies and practices during the 100-year period. Events noted near the end of the century indicate an increased willingness on the part of' the Library of Congress to involve the larger library community in the creation or revision of subject headings and other decision-making regarding the LCSH system. Finally, the author provides a summary of the other contributions to this collection of essays, a collection which celebrates the "centennial" of the world's most popular library subject heading language

    Abstract
Surveys conducted during the last four years under the auspices of the International Federation of Library Associations and Organizations (IFLA) reveal that the Library of Congress Subject Headings is heavily used in national libraries outside of the United States, particularly in English-speaking countries. Many other countries report using a translation or adaptation of LCSH as their principal subject heading language. Magda Heiner-Freiling presents an analysis of the IFLA data, which also includes information on the classification schemes used by the libraries and whether or not the libraries have produced a manual on the creation and application of subject headings. The paper concludes with an Appendix showing the complete data from the 88 national libraries that respond to the surveys
