- Abstract
- This paper discusses goals, methods and benefits of the conceptual mapping approach developed by the CrissCross project, in the framework of which the topical headings of the German subject headings authority file Schlagwortnormdatei (SWD) have been mapped to notations of the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC). Projectspecific retrieval concepts for improving thematic access in heterogeneous information spaces are outlined and explained on the basis of significant examples.

- Abstract
- Within the multilingual framework of the CrissCross project, MACS (Multilingual Access to Subjects) has continued its work. MACS has developed a prototype of mappings between three vocabularies: the LCSH (Library of Congress Subject Headings), RAMEAU (Répertoire d'autorité-matière encyclopédique et alphabétique unifié) and the SWD (Schlagwortnormdatei). A database with a Link Management System (LMI), which allows for an easy linking between English, French and German subject headings, was created. The database started working with headings from the disciplines sports and theatre, but by now headings from all other fields of knowledge have been included as well. In 2008-2010, equivalencies between English and French headings which had been produced by the Bibliothèque nationale de France have been completed with the most important German SWD topical terms. Thus, more than 50.000 trilingual links are now available and can be used in different retrieval scenarios. It is planned to use them in The European Library (TEL) in order to support multilingual searches over all European National Library collections. The article informs about the project workflow, methodology of mapping and future applications of MACS links.

- Abstract
- The system is available both in print and online versions. Names a few new subject headings in areas like science, technology, engineering and medicine (STEM). In this edition, there are a total of 1,600 new headings making it a total of 12,000+ preferred headings meant for subject access in small and medium sized libraries. This unprecedented increase of about 1,600 headings is mostly due the complete incorporation of the Canadian Sears last published independently in 2006. Also critically examines inconsistencies in a few headings. Concludes to say the new edition in resplendent, hard binding maintains its stellar reputation of a handy list of general subject headings both for applications and a teaching resource.

- Abstract
- The DDC is constantly changing. In order to keep the classification up-todate with scientific advancement and literary warrant, the editorial process regularly revises specific areas in the tables or schedules and, as a result, particular topics in a class are relocated into other classes or new, subordinate classes are created. In the German National Library, the DDC is the most important system for classification and indexing. Strictly speaking it is necessary to regularly review the correctness of the DDC notations, since their new meaning may not correctly reflect the contents of the bibliographic medium any longer. However for economic reasons this is not possible with the result that a search for literature on a specific topic may return improper resources, as that topic might not be represented by the used DDC notation anymore. In a small research project, the German National Library is currently investigating if it is possible to solve this problem by giving each version of a DDC class a unique identifier. By doing this it would be possible to explicitly label which version - and thus which topics are contained - of a DDC class was used for the classification of a particular resource. If those identifiers conform to the generic URI syntax, we can model the relations between the bibliographic resources, the subject headings and the different versions of the DDC classes as a semantic network using RDF and then investigate if this approach can improve retrieval in heterogeneously indexed collections. This article presents some preliminary results.

- Abstract
- The preparation of a bilingual Slovene-English general controlled vocabulary to be used for subject indexing in the COBISS.SI library information system, Slovenia, is a national project that started in March 2000. According to the basic methodology, a new subject schema named Splogni geslovnik COBISS.SI (COBISS.SI General List of Subject Headings) (SGC) is to be developed from the Sears List of Subject Headings (Sears). The project is divided into four phases: 1) translation and editing of Sears, 2) restructuring and adaptation of Sears and mapping of SGC headings to LCSH, 3) addition of new terms and preparation of instructions for use, and 4) conversion from the OCLC MARC format for authorities and inclusion of SGC in subject authority control system. By the end of 2002, the first part of Phase I was completed. Also described at some length are both the faceting of Sears headings and the addition of new terms based, among other, on LCSH.

- Abstract
- This article analyses how gender matters are handled in indexing languages. The examples chosen were the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), the UNESCO Thesaurus (UT) and the European Women's Thesaurus (EWT). The study is based on an analysis of the entries Man/Men and Woman/Women, their subdivisions and established relationship appearing under these entries. Other headings or descriptors are also listed when they allude to men or women but the gender sense occupies only second or third place in the entry, in the shape of an adjective or a second noun. A lack of symmetry, in the treatment of gender is noted, with recommendations being made for equal status for men and women, which should, however, avoid unnecessary enumerations.

- Abstract
- This paper examines some traditional information searching methods and their role in Hungarian OPACs. What challenges are there in the digital and online environment? How do users work with them and do they give users satisfactory results? What kinds of techniques are users employing? In this paper I examine the user interfaces of UDC, thesauri, subject headings etc. in the Hungarian library. The key question of the paper is whether a universal system or local solutions is the best approach for searching in the digital environment.
