Abstract

In 1997 a survey was held in the Netherlands by the Innovatie Wetenschappelijke Informatievoorziening (Innovation in Scientific Information Services) Steering Group to establish how much use students and research workers make of the Internet. 84% of respondents reported it useful for email communication, whilst 49% used it for consulting web documents. However, only 27% of respondents used it to consult electronic journals. A majority of respondents asked for greater assistance from library staff

Abstract

A survey of the literature shows that little is known of how reference enquiries are answered in libraries and how far answers satisfy readers' needs. To remedy this situation a survey was held in 15 academic libraries in the Netherlands. Survey results show that the traditional approach to reference service was the norm despite the need for a more flexible approach. Follow up studies showed that reference satff often lacked in-depth subject knowledge. A national programme is required to provide training and exchange of expertise

As part of her doctoral dissertation at Brabant Catholic University in the Netherlands A. Oomens recently held a survey to determine the relative merits of author and subject arrangements for non fiction collections. Although users browsing through the collections were more likely to find material of interest via a subject arrangement, those looking for a particular title were best served by an author arrangement.
