    Abstract
INFOBILA, a regional database of Latin American library and information science literature supported by the National Autonomous University of Mexico, the Organisation of American States and IFLA, is constructing a thesaurus to harmonise terminology used in Spanish-speaking countries, each of which has its own variations. A group comprising experts from Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela and Chile was initiated in 1995 to develop standardised terms, using thesauri from these countries. By the next meeting in 1996, group members will have individually tested the provisional integrated list and these results will have to be used to finalise a definitive thesaurus

    Abstract
Since the appearance of Diderot and D'Alembert's Encyclopedia in the 18th century, encyclopedias have undergone some modifications but until recently there have been no substantial alterations to the basic design established by the original authors. The emergence of massive data storage systems and sophisticated methods of information retrieval such as hypertext are bringing about considerable changes in the design of encyclopedias, especially as regards interactivity. Presents a critical evaluation of these new hypermedia encyclopedias, illustrating both their advantages and their weaknesses. Discusses the future of multimedia encyclopedia publishing

    Abstract
Analyzes issues that have a bearing on contemporary reference service and the reference librarian. These include: the librarian's aptitude for and attitude to change; the notion of the information explosion and its impact on reference service; changes of conceptual, technological, humanistic, economic, and practical nature; changing disciplines; a changing market; and more demanding and selective users

    Abstract
Considers leading scientific paradigms that have influenced the work of information scientists, particularly in the field of knowledge representation and organization. Discusses the underlying models, methodologies and applications, considering the possibility of integration into an expanded cognitive paradigm. Emphasises the importance of a working interface between theory and practice and an adherence to scientific methodology

    Abstract
Reviews literature on the main expert systems used in descriptive cataloguing. Discusses the features and problems of the three types of systems which have developed: advisory systems, systems to create bibliographic records and systems to carry out original cataloguing. The quantity and complexity of the rules of a cataloguing code make it difficult for them to be incorporated into the knowledge base of an expert system

    Abstract
Presents an analysis of the new Spanish edition of the UDC (1995) as compared to the previous abbreviated version (1991). The changes in physical presentation (ligibility), the systematic tables (elaboration, additions, deletions) and the retrieval of information through the use of the index, have all been revised. Evaluates the practicality of the new edition when applied to the classification of actual documents

Defines some problems and proposes methods for the classification and characterization of corporate authors on the basis of aspects that have caused the greatest problems in the past: jurisdictional area; its peculiarity, nature or condition; and its organizational chart within a hierarchical structure. Explains the resulting classification and characterization of corporate authors with examples

    Abstract
Account of the development of ISBD for cataloguing, focusing chiefly on the IFLA programme initiated at the International Meeting of Cataloguing Experts held in Copenhagen in 1969, which resulted in the 1974 1st official ed. of ISBD(M) for monographs. Versions were developed separately for serials (S), cartographic materials (CM) and non-book materials (NBM), resulting in incompatibilities resolved by the creation of a new general ISBD structure (G) in 1977. Since then new editions of (M), (S), (CM) and (NBM) have been produced, together with versions for printed music (PM) and ancient materials (A). The basic concepts of independence and uniformity underpin ISBD structure

Report of a concluding session at the 14th colloquy on library science at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, to discuss issues raised by the formal sessions on theoretical and philosophical problems. Three main themes emerged: (1) library science does have specific status although its specific limits, concepts and terminology are not agreed; (2) the ethical aspects, especially the question of the moral responsibilities of the leaders of the library science community, give rise to concern especially in relation to teaching curricula; and (3) the relation between information technology and society, which should ensure priority goes to the social aspects of library science in aiding human development

    Abstract
Bradford's law is widely used in collection development to identify the most productive periodicals, but does nott take into account the variables of frequency of publication and number of years of publication during a particular time span. Hence not all periodicals necessarily have the same opportunity to publish relevant articles. To test this hypothesis, the productivity of American sociology periodicals during 1987-91 was analysed and shown to correlate with frequency of publication and number of years of publication, giving a more accurate representation than using Bradford's law as originally formulated

    Abstract
The information process is characterised by 3 phases: potential information, consolidated information and information as knowledge, at which point is becomes a means rather than an end. In the social context, knowledge functions both as a social institution and a socialising institution: since reality is constantly changing, knowledge thus becomes a perspective determined by individual experience. Distribution of knowledge is controlled by those who have access, and in a society marked by inequality such as Brazil this virtually excludes all those living on the margins. The production and distribution of knowledge is thus based on capitalist criteria, reflecting the practices of the owners of capital

    Abstract
Telecommunications networks and standard protocols for information retrieval aid physical access to geographically scattered libraries. However, users face problems when searching for foreign language documents if they do not have a certain command of the relevant language(s). Multilingual facilities, in particular multilingual presentation and retrieval, can intellectually open the library catalogue to a wider range of international users. Describes an attempt at using multilingual resources with a view to improving the user OPAC interaction throught he TRANSLIB project and its integration at 'Biblioteca Hispanica de la Agencia Espanola de Cooperation Internacional'

    Abstract
A review of the literature. Authority control is intended to improve precision and recall but high failure rates detected during online catalogue searches by end users has given rise to debate about whether the time and effort involved in this approach is justified. Suggested solutions include using a combination of indexing techniques, increasing access points, greater standardisation of formats and more powerful software. Cooperative programmes at national and international levels can reduce costs. In Latin America some libraries use US / European formats, while others have developed their own local or regional systems; the whole situation needs to be reviewed to resolve the anomalies

    Abstract
Describes an approach to indexing which seeks to eliminate the shortcoming of the representation of information in existing bibliographic catalogues: Subject Access Project (SAP) indexing which has been used successfully at Lund University and elsewhere. Existing catalogue records have been enriched with terms selected from lists of contents and indexes in books thus facilitating access to specific parts of documents and smaller semantic entites such as chapter titles, subject titles and data in graphic or tabulated form available in a wide range of publications

    Abstract
A systematic literature review is carried out, detailing the research topics and the methods and techniques used in information science in studies published between 2000 and 2019. The results obtained allow us to affirm that there is no consensus on the core topics of information science, as these evolve and change dynamically in relation to other disciplines, and with the dominant social and cultural contexts. With regard to the research methods and techniques, it can be stated that they have mostly been adopted from social sciences, with the addition of numerical methods, especially in the fields of bibliometric and scientometric research.

    Abstract
Information science is currently dominated by 2 paradigms: one emphasises information retrieval as a technological process, based on natural sciences; the other derives from the social sciences, focusing on the information process as a communication act. The first is based on the structure of atoms, the second as people as collective actors. In Brazil the social science approach predominates, chiefly through the influence of 3 currents of thought: American liberalism; German social democracy and French post-structuralism. The ideas of the chief exponents of these theories have been developed by Brazilian researchers, introducing elements from political economy, quantum physics, linguistics, social science and epistemology. This interdisciplinarity is the key to unity in information science

    Abstract
For higher education, new technology opens up the possibility of online access to international information networks comprising the totality of human knowledge. Developing countries however risk becoming marginalized because they have no culture of cooperation. The Colombian Institute for the Development of Higher Education, ICFES, has been instrumental in developing the National Science and Technology Information Network, linked in 1993 to the National Higher Education System. The next step is to create a common communications infrastructure for all national systems, based on Internet protocols, so that all information units can link into the resources of the virtual library
