    Abstract
Lynne Howarth ging in ihrem Vortrag "Enabling metadata: creating a core record for resource discovery" auf die Reaktionen im weltweiten Stellungnahmeverfahren auf die Veröffentlichung des Papiers "Guidance an the Structure, Content and Application of Metadata Records for digital resources and collections" der Working Group an the Use of Metadata Schemes ein. Carol van Nuys stellte das norwegische "Paradigma Project and its quest for metadata solutions and services" vor.
Die Veranstaltung "Implementation and adaption of global tools for subject access to local needs" fand regen Zuspruch. Aus deutscher Sicht verdiente der Vortrag "Subject indexing between international standards and local context - the Italian case" besondere Beachtung.
The holdings record as a bibliographic control tool" geladen.

    Abstract
Explicit authority control of works is essentially non-existent. Our catalogs are built on a principle of controlling headings, and primarily headings for names of authors. Our syndetic structure creates a spider's web of networked relationships among forms of headings, but it ends there, despite the potential richness of depth among bibliographic entities. Effective authority control of works could yield richness in the catalog that would enhance retrieval capabilities. Works are considered to constitute the intellectual content of informative artifacts that may be collected and ordered for retrieval. In a 1992 study the author examined a random sample of works drawn from the catalog of the Georgetown University Library. For each progenitor work, an instantiation network (also referred to as a bibliographic family) was constituted. A detailed analysis of the linkages that would be required for authority control of these networks is reviewed here. A new study is also presented, in which Library of Congress authority records for the works in this sample are sought and analyzed. Results demonstrate a near total lack of control, with only 5.6% of works for which authority records were found. From a sample of 410 works, of which nearly half have instantiation networks, only 23 works could be said to have implicit authority control. However, many instantiation networks are made up of successive derivations that can be implicitly linked through collocation. The difficult work of explicitly linking instantiations comes with title changes, translations, and containing relations. The empirical evidence in the present study suggests that explicit control of expressions will provide the best control over instantiation networks because it is instantiations such as translations, abridgments, and adaptations that require explicit linking.

    Abstract
The authority controlled headings in a random sample of cataloguing records from RLIN member libraries were examined to determine the extent to which they either matched the forms a sestablished in RLIN's online authority files or, in cases where no headings existed in the files, had been formulated according to AACR2R principles and LoC guidelines. The study analzed all of the authority controlled access points in the records sample to determine the extent to ehich these access points matched the LoC Name Authority File (LoC NAF) and LoC Subject Authority File (LoC SAF) entries; it sought to determine which types of errors occured most frequently in instances where access points did not match the NAF and SAF files; and used the results of this analysis to add data to a list of preferred libraries kept by the Monograph Cataligng Section of the New York Public Library and used to increase the speed and efficiency of its copy cataloguing work flow

    Abstract
Reviews the organisation of the work of cataloguing standardisation in France and in standards published or in preparation. French standards follow IFLA reommendations on rules for bibliographic descriptions and headings. Standardisation of formats is less developed; however MARC is gaininig ground as a national exchange format, whilst USMARC is also used by university and public libraries. French policy on cataloguing standards aims both to promote international exchange of biblio-graphic recordswhile respecting national access requirements, and to simplify cataloguing by promoting the use of medium-level bibliographic records.

    Abstract
A study of the online catalogues of major academic libraries and databases in the Netherlands shows considerable variation in the form of name used for the author W.F. Hermans. The problem lies with a lack of authority control in headings used in the Dutch national union Pica catalogue. Reactions from 2 cataloguers point to the difficulties in maintaining catalogues in the face of reduced funding and to the important role played by the Pica project in improving library services and reducing cataloguing backlogs

    Abstract
Presents results of a study, conducted over a 4 month period and involving graduate students at illinois University at Urbana-Champaign who had completed a course on monograph cataloguing, to determine the types of errors that appear on original cataloguing copy by entry level cataloguers. Records were analyzed for errors in description, headings, encoding of MARC format, capitalization, punctuation, and any other errors affecting access. Results should assist educators in planning and implementing cataloguing courses and will inform professionals hiring cataloguers out of library school on how well the graduates are prepared for professional cataloguing

    Abstract
Existing subject headings lists and classification schemes are inadequate to deal with the very specific and rapidly developing subjects of theses and dissertations, and as a result libraries find it costly and time consuming to perform original and full cataloguing of these materials. Many libraries have been forced to improvise on descriptive and subject cataloguing to reduce the processing cost. Describes the improvisations of the Library of King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals in Dharan, Saudi Arabia, in cataloguing local and foreign theses and dissertations

    Abstract
Examines in detail the author cataloguing practices adopted by the Italian National Library Service, as set out in its 1995 Cataloguing Guide (Guida SBN), and discusses how far these practices accord with the standard 1979 RICA author cataloguing rules. Since the author headings prescribed by RICA include personal names, corporate names and titles, this survey looks at all such SBN catalogue entries having an access point function. Presents many examples of standard and variant forms of heading, and reviews control procedures

    Abstract
This bibliography contains selected cataloging tools an the Internet. It is divided into seven sections as follows: authority management and subject headings tools; cataloging tools by type of materials; dictionaries, encyclopedias, and place names; listservs and workshops; software and vendors; technical service professional organizations; and journals and newsletters. Resources are arranged in alphabetical order under each topic. Selected cataloging tools are annotated. There is some overlap since a given web site can cover many tools.

    Abstract
The principle of uniform heading underlies the rules for headings in descriptive cataloging in the American tradition. The rationale and the evolution of the principle are examined and its implications discussed in terms of the history of cataloging codes. The ideal embodied in the principle of uniform heading has been undergoing gradual modification in recent codes and considerably compromised in cataloging practice today.

    Abstract
The development and use of the MARC Archival and Manuscript Control (AMC) format is described. The format's unique characteristics stem largely from the needs of the archivl community for both a uniform means of control of materials at the collection level and a powerful tool for exchanging information about archival holdings. Uniques aspects of AMC cataloguing are described, including differing approaches to access points, form of entry, title, physical description, notes, subject headings, and call numbers.

    Abstract
This paper addresses issues in descriptive cataloging, subject analysis, and classification of Icelandic materials. It includes an extensive discussion of Icelandic personal names, particularly their formulation and its implications for establishing entries according to AACRZ. Subsequent sections of the paper deal with uniform titles in Old Norse, subject headings, and classification with descrip: tions of current practice and with reflections on needed enhance-, ments. It concludes with a consideration of the availability and usefulness of various cataloging aids and includes a bibliography of helpful reference sources.

    Abstract
In June 1995 the ABEI (Italian Catholic Librarians Association) established a working group in order to create an authority list of Catholic authors, (persons and corporate bodies) and of liturgical and religious anonymous works, titled ACOLIT, Autori Cattolici e Opere Liturgiche in Italiano (Catholic Authors and Liturgical Works in Italian). ACOLIT contains: (1) personal authors (particularly of the apostolic period and the Middle Ages); (2) popes and antipopes; (3) religious congregations, orders and societies; (4) Catholic Church and Roman Curia; (5) Catholic associations; (6) the Bible; (7) liturgical works; (8) religious anonymous works. Headings are established according to the RICA (Regole Italiane di Catalogazione per Autori), but also to the Norme per il catalogo degli stampati by the Vatican Library, the AACR2R, the RAK, the Reglas de catalogaci = F3n. Ed. refundita y rev., and the guidelines and decisions of IFLA. The work group has elaborated original considerations, particularly for the Bible. The group argues the choice and forth of the names of popes, Catholic Church and Roman Curia of the RICA and suggests that classical and Medieval writers should be formulated in Italian not in Latin, and that the indirect form, surname-name, should be used for saints who have a surname. ACOLIT has accepted the GARE punctuation (Guidelines for authority and reference entries/ recommended by the Working Group on an International Authority System; approved by the Standing Committees of the IFLA Section on Cataloguing and the IFLA Section on Information Technology). The print edition is planned for June 1997. ACOLIT will present headings in three sections: (1) Personal writers; (2) Corporate bodies; (1) Bible Liturgical and religious anonymous works, ABEI will also publish an electronic edition (CD ROM), periodically revised. The research will extend to Christian writers and -in the future- to writers of all religions.

    Abstract
An important part of cataloging education in library schools is descriptive cataloging, which is concerned with preparing the descriptions, entries and name headings for library materials. Although debate occurs over the primacy of theory and principles, or practices, and whether descriptive cataloging or subject analysis should receive the most emphasis, there is general agreement that all students need instruction in the processes of cataloging. The descriptive cataloging segment of the curriculum of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, University of Washington, is described to illustrate one approach to cataloging education.

    Abstract
After a long delay the final edition of RAK has been published. The old university libraries have suffered for years from using the Prussian Instructions which are obsolete and time-consuming; they have hesitated to give their old catalogues up but should do so as soon as possible. A new cataloguing policy is now needed, moving away from traditional practices that still govern even RAK towards simplified rules suitable for future developments such as use in centralised regional catalogues and in automated data processing. Simplified rules are proposed and discussed in relation to American and British minimal cataloguing, with suggestions for changes in basic terminology, general rules, main and subordinate entries, personal name and corporate body entries and subject headings

    Abstract
The recent success of recordings in Slavic liturgical music pose problems for cataloguers because the majority of them are not familiar with the services and terminology, the titles and problematical and the composers are difficult to trace. Describes the Divine Liturgy and the Vespers in parallel with the Mass and the Roman Catholic service. Proposes uniform titles for current musical fields and discusses terminology, language and biographic sources for composers. Makes some suggestions for the reconcilation of the realities of Slavic liturgical music and the uniform titles, classification and subject headings recommended by the Library of Congress

    Abstract
During the 1990s online systems have become the norm in all but the smallest libraries. However, many library systems had no authority control model and libraries are now finding themselves facing automated authority control for the first time. Drawing on the experiences of the libraries at the University of Colorado at Boulder, the University of Northern Colorado and Texas A&M University, discusses the pre-conversion questions of creating an online authority file and choosing which authority records to load, and the post-conversion questions of handling authority work for ongoing cataloguing, dealing with error reports, and keeping up to date with headings changes

    Abstract
WWW sites, consisting mainly of links to other Internet resources, have begun to proliferate and these sites are valuable to library users and researchers because they bring together in a single Web site links to a comprehensive array of information resources. Because libraries may elect to include bibliographic records for these sites in their online catalogues, cataloguers should be aware of some of the main aspects of cataloguing this new type of resource. Concludes that cataloguers should be aware of the main types and different characteristics of these Web sites, how to describe them in bibliographic records and how to assign appropriate subject headings for them
