- Abstract
- Describes the adoption of MARC and AARC standards since 1968. Considers an electronic library which unites catalogues, indexes, abstracts, bibliographies, the contents of documents and the documents themselves. This poses problems for bibliographic control in the regions of authority control and handling searchable full text. Explains why MARC would be suited to such a system. Propoeses a revised MARC and suggests a format for the accompanying manual. Considers improvements to AACR2

- Abstract
- Cataloging machine-readable data files (MRDF) is a new challenge to librarians. At the University of Florida, several months were spent on the development of procedures for cataloging computer files. Problems are identified and the University of Florida's solutions to these problems are provided. Our goal was to provide model research library approaches for handling MRDF, specifically magnetic tape computer files.

- Abstract
- Currently, few resources exist to guide libraries in the cataloguing of community information using the new USMARC Format for Cammunity Information (1993). In developing a community information database, Queens Borough Public Library, New York City, formulated their own cataloguing procedures for applying AACR2, LoC File Interpretations, and USMARC Format for Community Information to community information. Their practices include entering corporate names directly whenever possible and assigning LC subject headings for classes of persons and topics, adding neighbourhood level geographic subdivisions. The guidelines were specially designed to aid non cataloguers in cataloguing community information and have enabled library to maintain consistency in handling corporate names and in assigning subject headings, while creating database that is highly accessible to library staff and users

- Abstract
- During the 1990s online systems have become the norm in all but the smallest libraries. However, many library systems had no authority control model and libraries are now finding themselves facing automated authority control for the first time. Drawing on the experiences of the libraries at the University of Colorado at Boulder, the University of Northern Colorado and Texas A&M University, discusses the pre-conversion questions of creating an online authority file and choosing which authority records to load, and the post-conversion questions of handling authority work for ongoing cataloguing, dealing with error reports, and keeping up to date with headings changes

- Abstract
- This paper describes the Paradigma Project at the National Library of Norway and its work to ensure the legal deposit of all types of digital documents. The Paradigma project plans to implement extensions to IFLA's FRBR model for handling composite Group 1 entities at all abstraction levels. A new taxonomy is introduced: This is done by forming various relationships into component aggregates, and grouping these aggregates into various classes. This serves two main purposes: New applications may be introduced without requiring modifications to the model, and automated mechanisms may be designed to handle each class in a common way, largely unaffected by the details of the relationship semantics.

- Abstract
- False imprint information and other deceptive publication details present problems for catalogers. In this article, I describe different types of misleading information, including fictitions names of publishers, incorrect places of publication, and false dates; mention possible reasons for deception, including fear of prosecution, and emphasize the need for catalogers to be suspicious when handling certain types of material. Erotic printed materials and bootleg sound recordings are discussed in detail, and examples of misleading information in each medium and explanations of how cataloging rules address or fail to address specific circumstances are included. Catalogers need to be aware of both the potential problems associated with certain types of materials and the types of reference sources to consult when dealing with those materials.

- Abstract
- Librarians at Louisiana State University, while preparing to bring up a NOTIS serial check-in system, raised the question of whether or not to follow Northwestern's lead in reintroducing latest entry cataloging. A sample of the library's already cataloged, both inactive and active, serials was selected to assist in drawing a conclusion. The analysis of the sample revealed that close to thirty percent, a sizeable portion, of the serials had undergone straightforward title changes and could probably easily be cataloged with latest entry. However, it also brought up some local as well as other concerns which make the handling of title changes with latest entry once again a questionable alternative at this time.

- Abstract
- Argues that in library cataloguing and for optional functionality of bibliographic records the indexing of fields and subfields should follow a uniform approach. This would maintain effectiveness in searching, retrieval and display of bibliographic information both within systems and between systems. However, a review of different postings to the AUTOCAT and USMARC discussion lists indicates that the indexing and tagging of cataloguing data do not, at present, follow a consistent approach in online library systems. If the rationale of cataloguing principles is to bring uniformity in bibliographic description and effectiveness in access, they should also address the question of uniform approaches to the indexing of cataloguing data. In this context and in terms of the identification and handling of data elements, cataloguing standards (codes, MARC formats and the Z39.50 standard) should be brought closer, in that they should provide guidelines for the designation of data elements for machine readable records

- Abstract
- COPAC (CURL OPAC) is a union catalogue, based on records supplied by members of the Consortium of University Libraries (CURL), giving access to the online catalogue records of some of the largest academic research libraries in the UK and Ireland. Like all union catalogues, COPAC is supplied with multiple copies of records representing the same document in the contributing library catalogues. To reduce the level of duplication visible to the COPAC user, duplicate detection and record consolidation procedures have been developed. These result in the production of a single record for each document, representing the holdings of several libraries. Discusses the ways in which both the duplicate detection and record consolidation procedures are carried out, and problem areas encountered. Describes the general structure of these procedures, providing a model of the duplicate record handling mechanisms used in COPAC

- Abstract
- Reports the work of the ad hoc task force, coordinated by the Scholarly Communications Project (SCP) at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, to discuss the best means of cataloguing the theses palnned to be produced directly in electronic forms by postgraduate students. The main goals were to determine a process for handling electronic theses so that access would be at least as good as for hard copy and to find a way to derive cataloguing information from the electronic text and avoid rekeying as much as possible. An important part of the study was the application of existing MARC format tagged record structures to the new system. Concludes with brief notes on the concerns of UMI regarding Internet access of electronic theses

- Abstract
- The cataloging of music sound recordings is both challenging and interesting. As the technologies used to produce sound recordings change, these changes must be reflected in both cataloging theory and practice. Three formats: analog disc, cassette tape, and compact disk, all of which are readily available on the market, present special challenges to catalogers who must consider what might be the most effective way of handling these materials following the AACR2 cataloging rules and interpretations from Library of Congress. This paper examines the actual cataloging of those formats as done by several institutions and raises questions such as how to handle these materials in ways which will eliminate redundancy and increase efficiency in the practice of cataloging. Finally, an alternative approach, drawing on AACR2 practice in other areas, is suggested.

- Abstract
