    Abstract
    Durch die 'Datenautobahnen' ist die 'Informationsgesellschaft' in aller Munde. Das vorliegende Buch sammelt Beiträge, die seit mehr als 10 Jahren versuchen, die 'Informationsgesellschaft' von verschiedenen Aspekten aus zu betrachten. Dabei sind die neuen Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien nur eine Komponente, die zwar einerseits zu Visionen und strategischen Hoffnungen berechtigen, andererseits auch Risiken und Unvollkommenheiten aufweisen. Die 'Informationsgesellschaft' bildet sich daher weniger als eine informationstechnische Gesellschaft heraus, sondern als eine Gesellschaft, in der Überforderungen der Menschen und Komplexitätszuwächse neue Hilfsmittel der Komplexitätsreduktion und Konzeptionen der Selbstentwicklung erfordern. Den Instanzen von Kulturbewahrung und Kulturstiftung fallen dabei neue Aufgaben der Behandlung und Bereitstellung von Wissen zu. In dieser Situation ist auch Wissenschaft neu gefordert: Es zeichnet sich eine handlungsorientierte, pragmatische neue Wissenschaftlichkeit ab, für die Informationswissenschaft ein Prototyp sein könnte. Die postmoderne Wissensverwendung wird eine Hauptaufgabe der Informationsgesellschaft werden. Für die wissenschaftliche Bewältigung dieser Aufgabe wird eine zur Komplexitätstheorie erweiterte Informationstheorie grundlegend werden

    Abstract
    'Wissen' ist heutzutage ein viel benutzter Begriff, der meist dazu dient, etwas altbekanntes in neuem Licht erscheinen zu lassen. Wissensorganisation, der sich die seit 1989 bestehende Internationale Gesellschaft für Wissensorganisation (ISKO) verschrieben hat, erscheint damit den einen besonders attraktiv, für andere dafür umso suspekter. Fragen, die man vor Jahren oft hörte die und nach wie vor ihre Berichtigung haben, lauten: Womit beschäftigt sich Wissensorganisation? In welchem Bereich kann man es anwenden? Welchen Nutzen bringt es? Eine ähnliche Debatte wurde 1999 in der E-Mail-Diskussionliste 'wiss-org' geführt und nicht ganz so heftig Ende 2000 noch einmal aufgenommen. Sicher lässt sich mit diesem Beitrag kein Schlussstrich ziehen. Die verschiedenen Dimensionen sollen aber kurz angerissen und aktuell verortet werden
