    Abstract
    The large number and variety of online databases in the field of environment sciences and chemistry underlies the need for a cooperative evaluation approach. Presents 2 evaluation criteria, divided into 4 headings; general criteria (size of data source, cost of 1 hour searching, updating of database, availability on other media); chemical relevant criteria (number of chemicals, identification parameters of chemicals, test set chemicals, development of chemicals), environmental relevant criteria (information parameters for chemicals, parameter development); and criteria describing environmental chemicals (use of chemicals, quality of database). A 6 number scoring system is applied to these criteria and the Hasse diagram technique is presented for 19 bibliographic online databases using these criteria. Using this technique, 'good' and 'bad' databases are identified and changes in the database content from 1995 to 1998 can be visualized

    Das Fachinformationszentrum (FIZ) Karlsruhe ist als internationale Drehscheibe für Fachinformation seit Jahrzehnten verlässlicher und professioneller Servicepartner der Informationssuchenden in Wissenschaft und Technik. Neue web-basierte Dienstleistungen und Produkte erlauben dem professionellen Informationsbroker ebenso wie dem gelegentlichen Onliner oder Internet Pedestrian den effizienten und kostengünstigen Zugang zu Metadaten, naturwissenschaftlich-technisehen Daten und Fakten. Elektronische Volltexte per Hyperlink oder die komplette Dokument-Vermittlung werden gleichfalls angeboten. Die Weiterentwicklung und flexible Anpassung der Informationssysteme ermöglichen auch die Verknüpfung mit lokalen und regionalen Netzen der Forschungseinrichtungen und Hochschulen. Neue Serviceleistungen und Abrechnungsverfahren bieten besonders preisgünstige Konditionen für Hochschulen durch akademische Programme und Festpreise auf Subskriptionsbasis für ausgewählte Datenbanken.     Abstract
    This study analyzes the search behavior of Dutch-speaking nursing students with a nonnative knowledge of English who searched for information in MEDLINE/PubMed about a specific theme in nursing. We examine whether and to what extent their search efficiency is affected by their language skills. Our task-oriented approach focuses on three stages of the information retrieval process: need articulation, query formulation, and relevance judgment. The test participants completed a pretest questionnaire, which gave us information about their overall experience with the search system and their self-reported computer and language skills. The students were briefly introduced to the use of PubMed and MeSH (medical subject headings) before they conducted their keyword-driven subject search. We assessed the search results in terms of recall and precision, and also analyzed the search process. After the search task, a satisfaction survey and a language test were completed. We conclude that language skills have an impact on the search results. We hypothesize that language support might improve the efficiency of searches conducted by Dutch-speaking users of PubMed.

    Abstract
    Um dem Informationsbedarf in der Lehre, Forschung und Krankenversorgung sowie für die Weiter- und Fortbildung gerecht zu werden, hat sich die Medizin über Jahrtausende hinweg der verschiedensten, meist in technischer Hinsicht am fortgeschrittensten Medien bedient. Mitte der 60er Jahre eröffnete sich eine neue Ära im Informations- und Wissenstransfer durch die Entwicklungsfortschritte der Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien. Neue Medien wie CD-ROM-Datenbanken und weltweite Computernetze ermöglichten die Digitalisierung medizinischer Information und erlaubten deren Verbreitung in digitaler Form in Echtzeit. Heute finden wir in der Medizin und im Gesundheitswesen eine Situation vor, in der die neuen digitalen Medien parallel zu den konventionellen Printmedien genutzt werden, diese in manchen Fällen substituieren oder völling neue Informations- und Kommunikationsmöglichkeiten schaffen. Die erste Euphorie über die neuen Medien wird zunehmend ergänzt durch eine differenziertere Einschätzung der Technikfolgen, welche auch den weitreichenden sozio-kulturellen Auswirkungen Beachtung schenkt
