    Abstract
    Previously, documentation systems have suffered from the use of descriptors insufficiently keyed to colloquial language ot from the seemingly insoluble problem of automatically processing original texts. The aim is to combine interlinguistic cooperation in literature documentation with special conditions of non-numeric data processing, without having to develop a special standardised documentation language. In 1975 work began on abstracting some American and European journal articles on educational technology using the constructed language Esperanto. The resulting collection of abstracts is being used by the FEoLL Institut für Kybernetische Pädagogik, Paderborn, to develop a conversational system for the retrieval of answers and references

    Abstract
    The present paper is offered as the first of a series of articles in which PRECIS will be reviewed as a potential multi-lingual system, having in mind the obvious need, notably in a European context, for standard and language independent methods of subject analysis and document description. This first paper outlines the origins of PRECIS, and considers its use in English language indexing. A second paper will deal in general terms with the syntactical model which is used for producing PRECIS input strings and index entries. Later papers will then review the application of this model to indexing in, firstly, the Germanic languages (e.g. German and Danish), and, secondly, the Romance languages, illustrated by French.

    Abstract
    A general measure of retrieval effectiveness having full metric properties and treating the 'retrieval system - arbiter of relevance' situation symmetrically, is the Marczewski-Steinhaus metric, D, measuring the distance between the set of relevant documents, A, and set of retrieved documents, B, according to D=1-(n(A´B)/n(AvB)). D can be expressed as a function of precision and recall, or of generality, fallout and recall, and of other sets of traditional measures. Acceptance of the measure allows criteria for retrieval optimality and degeneracy to be stated, defined by minimum and constant values of D respectively. Precision-recall degeneracy curves for D are given and compared with those for another general measure: the probability that a document will be correctly identfied by a retrieval system. Statistical extensions of D are examined, and these and other properties of the metric are illustrated with seven examples

    Abstract
    Ziel und Methoden der Information und Dokumentation in der Bundestagsbilbiothek werden dargestellt. Die Einheit von "Bibliothek" und "Dokumentation" im Deutschen Bundestag wird verdeutlicht und die Ursache des hohen Leistungsstandes der Parlamentsbibliothek erklärt. Dabei wird das Gülichsche Katalog- und Dokumentationssystem in seinen wichtigsten Funktionen theoretisch beschrieben und einer breiten bibliothekarisch-dokumentarischen Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt. Dies geschieht in der Überzeugung, daß dieses System auch für andere Bibliotheken soiwe Informations- und Dokumentationsstellen geeignet und effektiv ist
