- Abstract
- Describes the conceptual framework and a vocabulary which can be used to discuss strategies and choices involved in question handling. A model of question handling is presented which provides for: developing strategies for handling questions; evaluating the appropriateness of the strategy; and relating levels of service to resource requirements. The model involves 5 phases: conducting a reference interview; formulating a question handling strategy; handling the question; reporting the result to the client; and evaluating the service delivered. It describes the reference librarian's interaction with a client and the types of decisions which a librarian makes when selecting and matching the level of resources to the desired level of service.

- Abstract
- The patterns of overlap between terms which are closely related in a thesaurus are considered. The relationships considered are parent/child, in which one term is a broader term of the other, and sibling in which to 2 terms share the same broader term. The patterns of overlap observed in the MeSH thesaurus with respect to selected MEDLINE postings are examined. The implications of the overlap patterns are discussed, in particular, the impact of the overlap patterns on the potential effectiveness of a proposed algorithm for handling negation is considered.

- Abstract
- Information handling technology is an explosive growth area. Librarians need not run faster just to keep up with the information explosion any more, but must now run faster to keep up with the information controllability explosion. If they don't, their place in the information-handling world will be usurped by others who do realise what a growth area it is

- Abstract
- The concept of Information Resource Management has been used as a working model in a project which aims at improving the awareness of information handling in Danish industrial companies. Describes the content of the project and the results which have been obtained until now, almost half way through the project. An important part of the project has been to analyse and describe the actual situation of information handling in 3 companies and to come up with proposals for improvements to the problems encountered. Some of the practical experiences gained during that process are described.

- Abstract
- Provides information for people who want (or need) to know what the SGML is and want to make use of it. Gives a fairly detailed description of what SGML is, why it exists, and provides a list of SGML players who are actively involved in either developing tools, providing services, offering consultancy or enganging in research for SGML. Describes the SGML work undertaken at Hatfield Polytechnic as part of Project Quartet funded by the British Library Research and Development Dept. The results and findings conclude that SGML forms a strong backbone for present and future document handling systems

- Abstract
- POINTER is a microcomputer program and expert system that simulates the advice of a government documents librarian suggesting the use of particular reference books. Using Government publications is a 2 volume work which identifies search strategies and sources of information for handling many specific topics and types of questionsassociated with federal documents. A comparison of these 2 reference aids reveals advantages and disadvantages of each as well as the difficulty of developing a conceptual framework for federal document research.

- Abstract
- It is intuitively clear that putting the cart before the horse is not the same as putting the horse before the cart. It is equally clear that a history of philosophy is different from a philosophy of history. Yet there is no logical relationship, like the AND/OR/NOT functions, which would enable manipulation of these permuted, non-commutative, relationships. In this paper we present a system for automatic handling of ordered sets, states based on these sets, and of differing points of view regarding a Universe of Discourse. We call what we are dealing with 'aspects' and we represent them by means of a new logical function called the 'overlap' function

- Abstract
- Until the 1980s, the handling of documentary information in business was usually split up among 4 unrelated independent departments: the library; archives; secretarial services; and reproduction/printing. The introduction of new technology allows the integration of these operations into a single system; comprising subsystems for: production of internal documents; acquisition and storage of external documents; information retrieval; archive creation and maintenance; and circulation of information between departments, based on local computer networks. In reality, not many businesses are making use of technology available to set up such integrated systems because of the lack of common standards for equipment and software, which makes internal and external communication unreliable. This problem may be resolved in the near future, as a result of discussions now in progress at international level.
