    Abstract
Describes SuperJANET which will complement but not replace the Joint Academic Network (JANET) in serving the higher education and research community and which will be a multimedia network carrying video, voice and images, based on optical fibre technology. Draws attention to the pilot network connecting 6 initial sites which will be in place in Mar 93 and discusses a range of pilot applications being developed. these include: supercomputer data visualization and interaction; access to remote facilities; remote consultation; teaching; group communication; and information services

    Abstract
Describes a pilot project at the UK Institute of Physics to investigate the potential use of Super JANET as a vehicle for the 'true' electronic journal. Aspects being studied are: identification of the articles required, by browsing existing collections of material; manipulation of the sub-article elements such as figures, texts and citations, both within a given article and between articles and other services; and exploration of the transfer and display of colour images and half-tones. The types of software under investigation include: relational databases with text-handling capabilities; free-text databases; presentation software; hypertext and browsing software; multimedia approaches; and conversion tools

    Abstract
Describes the CURL database, established by the Consortium of University Research Libraries (CURL); a group of 7 of the largest UK university libraries. The CURL database is a union catalogue holding 2,9 million cataloguing records of the CURL libraries, 0,5 million BNB records and 3,7 million LoC records. Concentrates on the telecommunications network aspects of the CURL database, access to which is over JANET, and the features of the CURL OCLC service

    Abstract
The British Library aims to use digital and network technology to achieve quick and easy access to the collections. The bridge between the strategy and its implementation is founded on the Initiatives for Access programme. Describes the primary Initiatives for Access programme currently under development: the British Library OPAC on JANET; the Patent Jukebox; the Electronic Beowulf; Portico; image digitization for document supply; digitization on the Treasures of the British Library; evaluation of neural networks for optical character recognition; and digitization of popular microfilm

    Abstract
Spansih subject headings can be used when searching ILLINET Online. Although Spanish language Bilindex subject headings have been available for more than a decade, the library literature has virtually ignored their existence. Provides a brief introduction to these headings, identifies several Illinois libraries which currently assign them, and presents some examples. Surveys various prospects and problems associated with their use

    Abstract
Discusses the theory and practice of subject headings, the principle and application of subject heading lists in various countries, and the present situation of the Chinese subject heading list in Taiwan. Suggests improvements to the chinese Subject Headings as follows: to increase the number of subject headings; to control the vocabulary to be used; to use fixed fields of Chinese MARC, performing the partial function of subdivision in the chinese Subject Headings; to announce the addition, correction and deletion of subject headings regularly and to compile a users' manual; to establish a national subject heading authority file in the MARC format; and to use the Chinese Subject Headings to organize Internet resources

    Abstract
Pauline Cochrane and Monika Kirtland's "Critical views of LCSH-Library of Congress Subject Headings: a bibliographic and bibliometric essay" published in 'Cataloging & classification quarterly 1(1982) S.71-93' has been widely cited as a source for discussion and complaints about LCSH. Cochrane and Kirtland cover the literature from 1944-1979. The present work provides a critique of the Cochrane/Kirtland study and a survey of the literature concerning the LCSHs during the 1980s. The classified bibliography is arranged according to the format of the Cochrane/Kirtland study to facilitate comparison. Criticism of LCSH reiterates the same points over and over again, whether it is sparseness, bias or currency of the subject headings. Significant trends which emerged in the 1980s include an increased emphasis on the use of LCSH as an online searching tool, concern for the syndetic structure of LCSH and the role of subdivisions, as well as repeated calls for the development of coherent standards to ensure LCSH evolves and is applied in a consistent manner

    Abstract
Describes a consultancy project for the development of a health care thesaurus involving the movement of text between different application programs. The thesaurus was built from existing text within the organisation originating from 3 sources: natural language registry file headings; descriptions from an internal business directory and a controlled vocabulary. The software used was WordPerfect and Cardbox

    Abstract
In a hypertext database, the information is presented as a network of nodes connected by links. Such nodes may be text, graphics, audio, video, and even other software. Although hypertext provides a new approach to information management, it also leaves a whole new set of problems for the designers of the hypertext database to solve. As the volume of information grows, the task of authoring a hypertext database becomes much more complex. In this article, the author presents the experiences during the development of a hypertext version of the user's guide for information services on JANET, in the UK, by using HyperPAD, a hypertext shell for the IBM PC. It may be the first step to explore the proper way to solve those problems which come together with the increasing application of hypertext

    Abstract
The National Information on Software and Services (NISS) is a centrally funded initiative for the provision of information services to the UK academic community via the JANET X.25 and IP (JIPS) network utilizing both Wide Area Networking protocols. The key NISS services include: the NISS Gateway; the NISS Bulletin Board; the NISS Public Access Collections (NISSPAC); NISSWAIS; NISS-EP; and NISS-ALEX. The NISS-ALEX service makes it possible for any user to access data on the Internet without having to connect manually to the remote site and gather the information

    Abstract
The UK's National Art Library at the Victoria & Albert Museum joined the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) in 1986 and from 1987 to 1990 created catalogue records in MARC format on the OCLC database pending the introduction of a stand-alone computer system. the library now employs a Dynix microcomputer system for cataloguing, acquisitions, circulation, serials control, community information and the provision of online public access catalogues (OPAC). Describes library records currently available online, progress in retrospective conversion, internal networking and plans for external networking via the Joint Academic Network (JANET), and the provision of bibliographic and image databases in CD-ROM and videodisc format. Future developments will include interface between museum/image and library/documentation databases
