- Abstract
- A thourough understanding of current subject cataloging practice, especially Library of Congress practice, will assist librarians in making the best use of new and emerging technology to ease the task of constructing subject headings. To gain insight into the most current subject cataloging practices at the Library of Congress, a random sample of one thousand bibliographic records with one or more 6XX fields and Library of Congress card numbers assigned from 1988 to the present was drawn from the BOOKSM database. Library of Congress catalogers rely heavily on the system of free-floating subdivisions in the process of constructing subject headings. Attempts to improve the subject cataloging process must take into account this fundamental characteristic of the Library of Congress subject headings system

- Abstract
- In this article the evolution of LCSH concerning women from LCSH 8(1975) through LCSH 14(1991) is traced. Dramatic changes have taken place, including an explosion of occupational headings for women, the disappearance of sexist headings and cross-references, and a shift from a somewhat narrow and condescending view of women to a more balanced view that takes into account the variety of roles they play. However, subtler forms of gender bias remain in the headings and in the ways they are applied. The author enumerates these problem areas and suggests possible solutions, concluding with a discussion of the larger issues involved in attempts to root out bias in the catalog

- Abstract
- Gives a general description of USMARC records for authority files with more detailed information on the fields used in subject headings authority files. The most important record types are explained with the use of appropriate examples. The maintenance of a subject headings vocabulary in authority file and the development of a headings language. In Poland there is no authority file maintained by the national bibliographic centre. Libraries using VTLS software have cooperated in the development of KABA, a common subject heading authority file located on the Warsaw University Library computer system

- Abstract
- Libraries using the LCSH can increase the effectiveness of their subject access. This can be accomplished through one of four methods for applying an increased number of headings: the addition of subject headings in situations where none have been supplied by LC; the use of pattern secondary headings; the use of major + minor techniques; and the use of minor + major techniques. Each of these methods will provide additional subject access to supplement that produced by the Library of Congress

- Abstract
- Investigates the inadequacy of the 10th ed. of LCSH regarding Islamic subject headings and compares it with some of the schemes available in Arabic. Whilst LCSH is not entirely inadequate, in some subjects related to Islam there is room for improvement and expansion. The following subjects are covered in the comparison: Islam as a general heading, Quran, the Prophet Muhammad, Hadith, islamic law, prayer, and Muslim pilgrims and pilgrimages
