    Abstract
    This study compared the search features and retrieval performance of Yahooligans!, Ask Jeeves for Kids, and Super Snooper on identical searches. This extended the earlier research conducted by Bilal (1999), which examined the cognitive, affective, and physical behaviors of twenty-two 7th grade science students' use of Yahooligans! search engine. The three types of searches the students formulated in Yahooligans! on an imposed fact-driven query were here conducted in Ask Jeeves for Kids and Super Snooper. The retrieval performance criteria of the three engines included: (1) retrieval output, (2) relevance, (3) overlap in results, and (4) redundancy. A matrix of features (e.g., database coverage, search interface, search capabilities, retrieval interface, filtering, feedback, online help, FAQs, and advertisements) was developed to compare the engines. The performance of the natural language capability embedded in Ask Jeeves for Kids was evaluated by comparing the results retrieved directly from Yahooligans! to those Ask Jeeves for Kids returned from Yahooligans! on identical searches.The. results shed light on the strengths and weaknesses of each engine and appropriateness to specific types of queries. Yahooligans! was the most effective on keyword searching. Super Snooper returned the highest number of hits but with zero relevance on all types of searches. Ask Jeeves for Kids was successful only on one keyword search and failed both the natural language phrase and multiple keyword. Implications are made for improving the engines' design, retrieval performance, and search features, as well as for user instruction

    Lecture given at the AIBM conference, Karlsruhe, Sep 95. The thesaurus appeared 1st in 1982, produced according to DIN standard 1463. This standard is largely adhered to, with 2 deviations: the controlled vocabulary is rather universal, covering more than 1 musical field, and descriptors are used as systematic collection points, with non-decriptors as subordinate headings.     Compares the features and performance of 6 Web search engines: AltaVista, Excite, HotBot, Infoseek, Lycos and Northern Light; 2 metasearch engines: Savvy Search and Inference Find; and the question answering system Ask Jeeves. Results of a standard set of 10 questions posed to each service show little overlap between search engines, so it is important to use more than one Web search engine if a comprehensive search is needed.     Abstract
    Pauline Cochrane and Monika Kirtland's "Critical views of LCSH-Library of Congress Subject Headings: a bibliographic and bibliometric essay" published in 'Cataloging & classification quarterly 1(1982) S.71-93' has been widely cited as a source for discussion and complaints about LCSH. Cochrane and Kirtland cover the literature from 1944-1979. The present work provides a critique of the Cochrane/Kirtland study and a survey of the literature concerning the LCSHs during the 1980s. The classified bibliography is arranged according to the format of the Cochrane/Kirtland study to facilitate comparison. Criticism of LCSH reiterates the same points over and over again, whether it is sparseness, bias or currency of the subject headings. Significant trends which emerged in the 1980s include an increased emphasis on the use of LCSH as an online searching tool, concern for the syndetic structure of LCSH and the role of subdivisions, as well as repeated calls for the development of coherent standards to ensure LCSH evolves and is applied in a consistent manner

    Abstract
    The DIMDI undertook a translation of NLM's MeSH, the machine-readable version is available from DIMDI. The thesaurus contains 18.000 subject headings in medicine and related fields. It is arranged: 1) alphabetically and 2) hierarchically. Both arrangements have a main list with the main subject headings only in German and two lists with German-English and English-German subject headings
