    Abstract
    Die amerikanische Philosophie boomt. Seit die postmodernen Theorien aus Frankreich in die Jahre gekommen sind, wendet sich der Blick über den Atlantik. Dort tritt ein weniger artistischer Blick auf die Realität an die Stelle dekonstruktiver Akrobatik. Impulse der europäischen Philosophie erfahren eine produktive Wendung, ein neuartiges transatlantisches Denken bildet sich heraus. Insbesondere die amerikanischen Kommunitaristen und liberale Ironiker wie Richard Rorty verschaffen dem Denken wieder Bodenhaftung. Dieser Band versammelt prägnante Kurzporträts der wichtigsten Denker und gibt Einblick in die angelsächsische Philosophie, deren analytische Grundierung lange Zeit ein Hindernis für ihre Rezeption im deutschsprachigen Raum war. Dies ist der dritte Band von »Profile der Gegenwartsphilosophie«, der sich mit dem angelsächsischen Denken befaßt. Wir stellen darin Autoren vor, die bis in unsere Zeit hinein ihre Wirkung entfalten und die aktuelle philosophische Diskussion entscheidend prägen. Karl R. Popper sowie Paul Feyerabend sind gebürtige Wiener, lebten und lehrten jedoch die meiste Zeit in England und Amerika. Darüber hinaus gehören sie mit ihrem Denken in die - im Falle Feyerabends freilich kritisch-zersetzenden - Argumentationszusammenhänge der analytischen Philosophie, die zwar im deutschsprachigen Raum ihren Ausgang nahm, jedoch im angelsächsischen Sprachraum zu ihrer Entfaltung kam. Stephen Hawking ist Physiker, begibt sich aber mit seiner Kosmologie in einen Raum wissenschaftlicher Spekulation, der ebensogut zu mathematisch-naturwissenschaftlichen wie auch zu philosophischen Fragestellungen Anlaß gibt. Die Grundlage für viele dieser philosophischen Profile bilden Rundfunkfeatures, die wir für das Deutschlandradio Köln geschrieben haben und die dort ausgestrahlt worden sind. Insofern gilt unser besonderer Dank Hildegard Krei, die mit ihrem Interesse an unseren Features auch das Zustandekommen dieses Bandes unterstützte.

    Lecture given at the AIBM conference, Karlsruhe, Sep 95. The thesaurus appeared 1st in 1982, produced according to DIN standard 1463. This standard is largely adhered to, with 2 deviations: the controlled vocabulary is rather universal, covering more than 1 musical field, and descriptors are used as systematic collection points, with non-decriptors as subordinate headings.     Abstract
    "Es gibt eine Reihe von Philosophen (zu der auch ich selbst gehöre), die ihr Bestes tut, um die herkömmlichen Unterscheidungen zwischen Objektivem und Subjektivem, Vernunft und Leidenschaft, Erkenntnis und Meinung, Wissenschaft und Politik zu komplizieren. Wir bieten strittige Umdeutungen dieser Unterscheidungen und formulieren sie in einer Art und Weise, die von der Tradition abweicht. So bestreiten wir zum Beispiel, daß die Suche nach objektiver Wahrheit eine Suche nach Realitätsentsprechung sei, und treten dafür ein, sie solle statt dessen als Suche nach möglichst umfassendem intersubjektivem Einvernehmen aufgefaßt werden. Daher wird uns oft der Vorwurf gemacht, wir brächten die Überlieferungen und Praktiken in Gefahr, die den Menschen vorschweben, wenn von »akademischer Freiheit«, »wissenschaftlicher Integrität« oder »Standards der Forschung« die Rede ist. Dieser Ansicht ist auch mein bekannter Fachkollege John Searle. In einem kürzlich erschienenen Artikel beschreibt Searle den überlieferten Vernunftgedanken des Abendlands, den er mit einem Schlagwort als »Westliche Rationalistische Tradition« bezeichnet. Diese Tradition, meint er, sei von philosophischer Seite unter Beschuß geraten, und dieser Angriff werde unter anderem von Thomas Kuhn, Jacques Derrida und mir selbst geführt. Desweiteren behauptet Searle, die gravierendste Einzelfolge der Ablehnung der Westlichen Rationalistischen Tradition bestehe darin, »daß sie dieMöglichkeit schafft, herkömmliche Maßstäbe derObjektivität, derWahrheit und der Rationalität preiszugeben, und einem Bildungsprogramm Tür und Tor öffnet, zu dessen vorrangigen Zwecksetzungen die Herbeiführung gesellschaftlicher und politischer Umgestaltungen gehört«.
    Searle verzeichnet eine ganze Reihe philosophischer Thesen, die nach seiner Anschauung maßgeblich sind für die Westliche Rationalistische Tradition, doch ich werde hier nur auf zwei eingehen, nämlich die These, wonach sich die Erkenntnis, um mit Searle zu reden, im Regelfall auf eine bewußtseinsunabhängige Wirklichkeit bezieht, sowie die These, wonach die Erkenntnis durch Sätze zum Ausdruck gebracht wird, »die deshalb wahr sind, weil sie diese Realität genau wiedergeben«. Ich bin mit keiner dieser beiden Thesen einverstanden, sondern vertrete ebenso wie Kuhn die Meinung, daß wir Behauptungen, denen zufolge »sukzessive wissenschaftliche Überzeugungen immer wahrscheinlicher werden oder der Wahrheit in immer besserer Weise näherkommen, jeglichen Sinn absprechen und zugleich darauf hinweisen sollten, daß keine Beziehung zwischen Überzeugungen und einer vermeintlich bewußtseinsunabhängigen oder >äußeren< Welt der Gegenstand von Wahrheitsansprüchen sein kann«."

    Abstract
    Das Buch macht den Leser mit der Avantgarde der heutigen Forschung bekannt, darunter die Nobelpreisträger. Das Buch gilt als eine Einführung in die wichtigsten wissenschaftlichen Entwicklungen der letzten fünfzehn Jahre. - John Horgan liefert sehr überzeugende Argumente für die Behauptung, daß die besten und aufregendsten wissenschaftlichen Entdeckungen bereits hinter uns liegen. Er stellt fest, daß heutzutage viele Wissenschaftler, besonders die, die er für sein Buch interviewte, "von einem tiefen Unbehagen erfaßt" sind -- zum Teil wegen schwindenden Geldmitteln und erbittertem Wettbewerb, aber auch in zunehmendem Maße aus dem Gefühl heraus, daß "das große Zeitalter der wissenschaftlichen Entdeckungen vorbei ist". Anders ausgedrückt -- so argumentiert er -- die großen Probleme, die gelöst werden können, sind es bereits; und die, die noch nicht gelöst wurden, können es auch nicht werden. Unter den gefeierten Denkern, die in diesem ehrgeizigen Buch zitiert werden, befinden sich Namen wie Stephen Jay Gould, Roger Penrose und John Archibald Wheeler. Seine These wird durch eine präzise Geschichte der wissenschaftlichen Forschung der letzten 20 Jahre eingeleitet und umfaßt Themen wie zum Beispiel die Superstring-Theorie, mathematische Topologie und die Unterscheidung von Chaos und Komplexität. - Interviews mit verschiedenen Personen (S.     Abstract
    The great dream of philosophers and scientists for millennia has been to give us a complete account of the order of things. A powerful articulation of such a dream in this century has been found in the idea of a unity of science. With this manifesto, John Dupre systematically attacks the ideal of scientific unity by showing how its underlying assumptions are at odds with the central conclusions of science itself. In its stead, the author gives us a metaphysics much more in keeping with what science tells us about the world. Elegantly written and compellingly argued, this provocative book will be important reading for all philosophers and scholars of science.
