    Abstract
The strategic vision for information services at the University of Maryland at Baltimore incorporates the integration concept advocated by the National Libary of Medicine. Computing, library and telecommunications services report to a single vice president; services are being redesigned for optimal functionality. Recent accomplishments include transmitting radiographic images between the campus network and the Johns Hopkins and televising interactive grand rounds - other projects also target networking visual information. A new health sciences library/information services building, scheduled to open in 1997, will house the infrastructure for the virtual library

    Abstract
Discusses institutional and external trends influencing the direction of reference services at the William H. Welch Medical Library, Johns Hopkins University, Maryland. Describes fundamental progammatic changes in the reference services over the past decade and speculates on what reference may mean at the millenium, give a growing instructional role. Relates the cost centre model used to fund the library's programmes to current trends and offers perspectives on changes that can be expected to be faced

    Abstract
Lecture given at the AIBM conference, Karlsruhe, Sep 95. The thesaurus appeared 1st in 1982, produced according to DIN standard 1463. This standard is largely adhered to, with 2 deviations: the controlled vocabulary is rather universal, covering more than 1 musical field, and descriptors are used as systematic collection points, with non-decriptors as subordinate headings. The 1994 edition has widened its contents range. There are still problems with ambiguity of headings and titles

    Abstract
Knowledge management is a new role for academic research libraries that has the potential to integrate the library into scholarly and scientific communication in a significant way. Work in knowledge management is advancing in both the sciences and the humanities. The Genome Data Base at the Johns Hopkins University is currently the most advanced knowledge management prototype. As part of its new Center for Knowledge Management, the University of California, San Francisco is undertaking several initiatives to create a campuswide knowledge management environment

    Abstract
New trends and pressures in the academic library, in particular technology and remote use, have prompted a re-assessment of the quality and effectiveness of reference, especially as regards patron needs and preferences. Describes a focus group study conducted between spring 1995 and spring 1996 at the main library of Johns Hopkins University, Maryland. The study was designed to elicit information about how patrons were dealing with the rapidly changing technological environment, and how helpful they felt reference staff were to them; how to assist the library in the redesign of service space, signage, and instructional materials; and the most effective way to conduct instruction. Findings show that many people are uncomfortable asking questions, most have difficulty with basic information retrieval principles and many did not see library instruction as a priority. Discusses the implications of these findings for reference work in the academic library

    Abstract
Spansih subject headings can be used when searching ILLINET Online. Although Spanish language Bilindex subject headings have been available for more than a decade, the library literature has virtually ignored their existence. Provides a brief introduction to these headings, identifies several Illinois libraries which currently assign them, and presents some examples. Surveys various prospects and problems associated with their use

    Abstract
Discusses the theory and practice of subject headings, the principle and application of subject heading lists in various countries, and the present situation of the Chinese subject heading list in Taiwan. Suggests improvements to the chinese Subject Headings as follows: to increase the number of subject headings; to control the vocabulary to be used; to use fixed fields of Chinese MARC, performing the partial function of subdivision in the chinese Subject Headings; to announce the addition, correction and deletion of subject headings regularly and to compile a users' manual; to establish a national subject heading authority file in the MARC format; and to use the Chinese Subject Headings to organize Internet resources
