- Barry Budd erklärt, wie XML in Verbindung mit Java optimal funktionieren und Daten zwischen Anwendungen transferieren kann. Das Buch ist nicht nur für Anfänger interessant. Im zweiten Teil erfährt der Leser alles über die lineare Untersuchung von XML-Dateien und die Programmierung mit SAX. Es folgt der holistische Ansatz mit DOM und dessen Java-optimierter, eleganterer Alternative JDOM. XSL, die Anzeige von XML-Daten im Web und Java API for XML-Binding (JAXB) mit der man aus XML-Dokumenten maßgeschneiderte Java-Klassen dateien erstellen kann. Teil drei zeigt Spezialwerkzeuge für Webservices Soap, UDDI, WSDL, Java API for XML Messaging (JAXM) und die Arbeit mit XML-Registraren. Zu den Techniken erfährt der Leser sinnvolle Einsatzszenarien. Der Autor verdeutlicht die Theorie mit Code-Beispielen, die in Teilen für eigene Projekte verwendbar sind.

- Abstract
- Die Geschichte informeller, gemeinschaftlich gepflegter Online-Bibliographien sowie die zentralen Konzepte von Social-Bookmarking-Diensten (Bibliographie sozialer Netzwerke, Sacherschließung durch Social Tagging, Folksonomies als persönliche und Collabularies als gemeinschaftliche Vokabulare) werden dargestellt und diskutiert. Zur Charakterisierung der geschilderten Gesamtentwicklung wird der Begriff Metadatenrevolution eingeführt. Es werden Strategien vorgeschlagen, mit denen Bibliotheken und Informationseinrichtungen auf diese Entwicklung eingehen können.
