- Abstract
- Describes a pilot project at the UK Institute of Physics to investigate the potential use of Super JANET as a vehicle for the 'true' electronic journal. Aspects being studied are: identification of the articles required, by browsing existing collections of material; manipulation of the sub-article elements such as figures, texts and citations, both within a given article and between articles and other services; and exploration of the transfer and display of colour images and half-tones. The types of software under investigation include: relational databases with text-handling capabilities; free-text databases; presentation software; hypertext and browsing software; multimedia approaches; and conversion tools

- Abstract
- In a hypertext database, the information is presented as a network of nodes connected by links. Such nodes may be text, graphics, audio, video, and even other software. Although hypertext provides a new approach to information management, it also leaves a whole new set of problems for the designers of the hypertext database to solve. As the volume of information grows, the task of authoring a hypertext database becomes much more complex. In this article, the author presents the experiences during the development of a hypertext version of the user's guide for information services on JANET, in the UK, by using HyperPAD, a hypertext shell for the IBM PC. It may be the first step to explore the proper way to solve those problems which come together with the increasing application of hypertext

- Abstract
- The National Information on Software and Services (NISS) is a centrally funded initiative for the provision of information services to the UK academic community via the JANET X.25 and IP (JIPS) network utilizing both Wide Area Networking protocols. The key NISS services include: the NISS Gateway; the NISS Bulletin Board; the NISS Public Access Collections (NISSPAC); NISSWAIS; NISS-EP; and NISS-ALEX. The NISS-ALEX service makes it possible for any user to access data on the Internet without having to connect manually to the remote site and gather the information

- Abstract
- The UK's National Art Library at the Victoria & Albert Museum joined the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) in 1986 and from 1987 to 1990 created catalogue records in MARC format on the OCLC database pending the introduction of a stand-alone computer system. the library now employs a Dynix microcomputer system for cataloguing, acquisitions, circulation, serials control, community information and the provision of online public access catalogues (OPAC). Describes library records currently available online, progress in retrospective conversion, internal networking and plans for external networking via the Joint Academic Network (JANET), and the provision of bibliographic and image databases in CD-ROM and videodisc format. Future developments will include interface between museum/image and library/documentation databases

- Abstract
- The British Library underlined its commitment to digital and networking technologies with the announcement of its Initiatives for Access programme: the intention of which is to make the library collection more available to users, including other libraries, visitors to the exhibtion galleries, and researchers in the reading rooms or off site. One of the first projects is the British Library Network OPAC, available to all JANET Internet sites. Other projects include a project at the Document Supply Centre to scan and index 50 top scientific periodicals, making information retrieval by users very rapid; and the digitization of manuscripts (Electronic Beowolf project) for dissemination and preservation

Considers pilot applications for SuperJANET covering library and non library applications and strategic issues to be met for SuperJANET to become an information superhighway. Gigabyte networks will be 1.000 time faster than JANET and will enable sophisticated image and voice communication. SuperJANET uses synchronous digital hierarchy technology. SuperJANET is being developed and and introduced in a number of phases. Discusses supercomputing, library and information services, and strategic issues. Examines the role of technology and librarians in the development of the virtual library

- Abstract
- The ESRC data archive at the University of Essex has provided access to social science research data for the academic community since the late 1960s. Since the mid-1980s bibliographic descriptions of all the Archive's 5000 plus datasets have been available to users of JANET and the Internet via the Archives BIRON (Bibliographic Information Retrieval Online) System. The Archive is now seeking to extend the bibliographic information on BIRON to the full texts of the documentation held. Discusses the nature of social science data and documentation, digitisation of existing paper documents, development of information retrieval tools and access to the resulting databases both by CD-ROM and via the Internet

- Abstract
- The British Library Online Catalogue is one of the main systems to be implemented before the British Library's move to St Pancras and is already installed in the Aldwych, Holborn and Bloomsbury reading rooms. It is intended to be a replacement for the manual catalogues and has been built in a modular manner enabling the easy replacement of old parts and additiion of new ones. Describes the basic design requirements for the catalogue, catalogues currently available in the system and those to be added shortly, and links to the Reader Admissions System and the Automated Book Requesting System. Discusses the 3 principal design components and proposes links to JANET

- Abstract
- UnCover is an online current awareness and document delivery service, located in Denver, CO and containing 4 million articles from over 13.000 interdisciplinary periodicals. UnCover is accessed by librarians over the Internet and similar networks such as the UK's JANET and Australia's AARNET. Users can search the database, identifying articles of interest, and request their delivery within 24 hours by facsimile transmission. Searching is by author, article keyword, or periodical title. Specific issues of a periodical can be retrieved and the articles appearing in that issue can be listed on screen, effectively recreating the contents pages. Unlike traditional abstracting and indexing service databases, UnCover is an up to date source of information and users do not have to wait 3-6 months for the article citation to appear in the database

- Abstract
- Points to the trends in libraries and information services to shift away from the use of long established online hosts (such as DIALOG and STN) towards the use of CD-ROMs and direct access services, such as BIDS, Janet and CHEST, Illustrates the trend with statistics of host based MEDLINE searches conducted at the Barnes Library, Birmingham University; which show a decline from 526 searches in 1991/92 to 22 searches in 1995/96. Describes the process undertaken within the Information Services, Birminghampton University, to define a policy for the possible continuation of their mediated online searching service. Reports results of a questionnaire survey of other UK higher education institutions which confirmed their own feelings that the provision of such services was in decline, due largely to the shift towards end user access. With the increasing availability of nationally site licensed databases and locally available CD-ROMs, it is likely the researchers will ignore other commercial information services
