    Abstract
Surveys conducted during the last four years under the auspices of the International Federation of Library Associations and Organizations (IFLA) reveal that the Library of Congress Subject Headings is heavily used in national libraries outside of the United States, particularly in English-speaking countries. Many other countries report using a translation or adaptation of LCSH as their principal subject heading language. Magda Heiner-Freiling presents an analysis of the IFLA data, which also includes information on the classification schemes used by the libraries and whether or not the libraries have produced a manual on the creation and application of subject headings. The paper concludes with an Appendix showing the complete data from the 88 national libraries that respond to the surveys

    Abstract
In 1994 Munich public libraries introduced online cataloguing and chose to test the use of RSWK draft for music cataloguing. All parts of a subject heading chain proved to have equal weight and to be retrievable separately. Some aspects were not covered, so the draft must be discussed further

    Abstract
Subject headings incorporating geographic terms present a number of problems for online searching and for other purposes given the diversity of subject heading structures seen in machine readable records in the WLN (Washington Library Network) system. Factors observed include changes in heading structures, human error, the online authority verification process and ambiguities in subject heading instructions for catalogers. Problem structures and statistics for some specific heading variations are presented, searching implications and alternative heading options are examined.

    Abstract
The effectivity of bibliographic data depends upon clearly defined standards, prompt publication and a range of possible users. The Deutsche Bibiothek has converted data into UNIMARC for national exchange purposes. The keyword standard file of over 260.000 heading and reference forms is available on magnetic tape and microfiche. A central data file on corporate bodies, produced by the Deutsche Bibliotheksinstitut is also available. From 1989 the amount of information in topical index entries may be reduced. Further changes planned include more precise definition of collection guidelines, new operational forms for floppy disc and CD-ROM and selective bibliographic services for particular publication forms and types of library.
