- Abstract
Eine Projektgruppe der Bibliothek der University of California etwa urteilte 2005: "LCSH's complex syntax and rules for constructing headings restrict its application by requiring highly skilled personnel and limit the effectiveness of automated authority control." In einer für die Library of Congress erstellten Expertise mit dem Titel 'On the record' von 2008 heißt es: "LCSH suffers (...) from a structure that is cumbersome from both administrative and automation points of view". Es wird empfohlen, die LCSH in ein flexibleres Werkzeug zu verwandeln: "Transform LCSH into a tool that provides a more flexible means to create and modify subject authority data."

- Abstract
- New trends and pressures in the academic library, in particular technology and remote use, have prompted a re-assessment of the quality and effectiveness of reference, especially as regards patron needs and preferences. Describes a focus group study conducted between spring 1995 and spring 1996 at the main library of Johns Hopkins University, Maryland. The study was designed to elicit information about how patrons were dealing with the rapidly changing technological environment, and how helpful they felt reference staff were to them; how to assist the library in the redesign of service space, signage, and instructional materials; and the most effective way to conduct instruction. Findings show that many people are uncomfortable asking questions, most have difficulty with basic information retrieval principles and many did not see library instruction as a priority. Discusses the implications of these findings for reference work in the academic library

- Abstract
- Sears List of Subject Headings (Miller and McCarthy 2010), first published in 1923, is now in its 20th edition. Like most subject headings lists, apart from being a list of preferred (and non-preferred) headings, it also provides patterns, clear instructions, and examples for coining new subject headings not explicitly listed. Key headings form a vital part of the system of coining new headings. It is proposed that more key headings should be designated. Some candidate headings are described. One far-reaching provision seems to be the use of a subdivision of a preferred heading with all of its NTs. Thus, every preferred heading is a potential key heading for all of its NTs. This proposal works on the principle that what is true of a class is true of its narrower classes of all types. Applying this principle will enormously enhance the capacity of the List without adding even an iota to its text and size.

- Abstract
- Discusses the theory and practice of subject headings, the principle and application of subject heading lists in various countries, and the present situation of the Chinese subject heading list in Taiwan. Suggests improvements to the chinese Subject Headings as follows: to increase the number of subject headings; to control the vocabulary to be used; to use fixed fields of Chinese MARC, performing the partial function of subdivision in the chinese Subject Headings; to announce the addition, correction and deletion of subject headings regularly and to compile a users' manual; to establish a national subject heading authority file in the MARC format; and to use the Chinese Subject Headings to organize Internet resources

- Abstract
- Scope notes from Library of Congress Subject Headings are examined for 1) adherence to principles enunciated in the introduction to the list; 2) peculiarities of subject headings associated with such notes; 3) the structure of the notes; and 4) typical patterns associated with certain categories of subject headings. Scope notes are shown to enable catalogers to apply subject headings consistently and readers to distinguish related headings knowledgeably.

- Abstract
- Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world and a review of the lists of subject headings in this language reveals numerous efforts over a period of time, usually involving some form of collaboration, but largely isolated from each other. Technological developments suggest that a greater degree of cooperation is now possible and would be beneficial to the international library community if other barriers can be surmounted. The lcsh-es.org project demonstrates this concept in a practical way and suggest a new model for international cooperation in authority control. The site may be accessed at http://lcsh-es.org.

- Abstract
- Pauline Cochrane and Monika Kirtland's "Critical views of LCSH-Library of Congress Subject Headings: a bibliographic and bibliometric essay" published in 'Cataloging & classification quarterly 1(1982) S.71-93' has been widely cited as a source for discussion and complaints about LCSH. Cochrane and Kirtland cover the literature from 1944-1979. The present work provides a critique of the Cochrane/Kirtland study and a survey of the literature concerning the LCSHs during the 1980s. The classified bibliography is arranged according to the format of the Cochrane/Kirtland study to facilitate comparison. Criticism of LCSH reiterates the same points over and over again, whether it is sparseness, bias or currency of the subject headings. Significant trends which emerged in the 1980s include an increased emphasis on the use of LCSH as an online searching tool, concern for the syndetic structure of LCSH and the role of subdivisions, as well as repeated calls for the development of coherent standards to ensure LCSH evolves and is applied in a consistent manner

- Abstract
Urheberrechte). Der Thesaurus ist Bestandteil des UMLS (Unified Medical Language System) der NLM. Übersetzungen liegen auch in Finnisch, Französisch, Italienisch, Portugiesisch, Russisch und Spanisch vor.

- Abstract
- In the June 2003 issue of D-Lib Magazine, Kenney et al. (2003) discuss a comparative study between Cornell's email reference staff and Google's Answers service. This interesting study provided insights on the potential impact of "computing and simple algorithms combined with human intelligence" for library reference services. As mentioned in the Kenney et al. article, Bill Arms (2000) had discussed the possibilities of automated digital libraries in an even earlier D-Lib article. Arms discusses not only automating reference services, but also another library function that seems to inspire lively debates about automation-metadata creation. While intended to illuminate, these debates sometimes generate more heat than light. In an effort to explore the potential for automating metadata generation, the Digital Knowledge Center (DKC) of the Sheridan Libraries at The Johns Hopkins University developed and tested an automated name authority control (ANAC) tool. ANAC represents a component of a digital workflow management system developed in connection with the digital Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music. The evaluation of ANAC followed the spirit of the Kenney et al. study that was, as they stated, "more exploratory than scientific." These ANAC evaluation results are shared with the hope of fostering constructive dialogue and discussions about the potential for semi-automated techniques or frameworks for library functions and services such as metadata creation. The DKC's research agenda emphasizes the development of tools that combine automated processes and human intervention, with the overall goal of involving humans at higher levels of analysis and decision-making. Others have looked at issues regarding the automated generation of metadata. A session at the 2003 Joint Conference on Digital Libraries was devoted to automatic metadata creation, and a session at the 2004 conference addressed automated name disambiguation. Commercial vendors such as OCLC, Marcive, and LTI have long used automated techniques for matching names to Library of Congress authority records. We began developing ANAC as a component of a larger suite of open source tools to support workflow management for digital projects. This article describes the goals for the ANAC tool, provides an overview of the metadata records used for testing, describes the architecture for ANAC, and concludes with discussions of the methodology and evaluation of the experiment comparing human cataloging and ANAC-generated results.

- Abstract
