    Abstract
    Wie kann Aktivität im Gehirn Gefühle auslösen? Wie kann "bloßes Fleisch" - so wird der Körper in Cyberpunkromanen oft abfällig genannt -- subjektives Empfinden hervorbringen? Oder allgemeiner gesagt: Wie kann etwas Physisches etwas Nichtphysisches, subjektive Zustände erzeugen? Ob es der Zahnschmerz ist, die Freude beim Anblick der eigenen Kinder oder der Geschmack eines edlen Weins, sie alle haben denselben Ursprung in der Aktivität von Nervengewebe, im Bewusstsein. Christof Koch forscht seit Jahren über das Thema Bewusstsein. In einer Art Bestandsaufnahme zeigt er den derzeitigen Stand der Forschung auf, an dem auch maßgeblich Wissenschaftler wie Francis Crick, Ned Block, David Chalmers, Stanislas Dehaene, Giulio Tononi und Wolf Singer mitgewirkt haben. Ihm erscheint nicht als Widerspruch, mit naturwissenschaftlichen, empirischen Methoden erklären zu wollen, wie Gefühle entstehen. Wir sind uns der meisten Dinge, die in unserem Kopf vorgehen, nicht bewusst.     Abstract
    The system is available both in print and online versions. Names a few new subject headings in areas like science, technology, engineering and medicine (STEM). In this edition, there are a total of 1,600 new headings making it a total of 12,000+ preferred headings meant for subject access in small and medium sized libraries. This unprecedented increase of about 1,600 headings is mostly due the complete incorporation of the Canadian Sears last published independently in 2006. Also critically examines inconsistencies in a few headings. Concludes to say the new edition in resplendent, hard binding maintains its stellar reputation of a handy list of general subject headings both for applications and a teaching resource.

    Das Bewusstsein ist eines der letzten großen ungelösten Rätsel der Wissenschaft - und sicherlich das größte der Biologie. Wir können den salzigen Geschmack von Kartoffel-Chips spüren, den unverkennbaren Geruch von Hunden wahrnehmen, wenn sie im Regen waren, und kennen das besondere Gefühl, wenn man nur an den Fingerkuppen hängend viele Meter über dem sicheren Boden in einer Felswand klettert. Wie können diese Eindrücke aus den Neuronen und den mit ihnen assoziierten Synapsen und molekularen Prozessen entstehen? Die Frage nach dem Bewusstsein hat die Ideen von Philosophen, Wissenschaftlern, Ingenieuren und den denkenden Menschen generell beflügelt. Was ist Bewusstsein? Das ist ein Schwindel erregendes Unternehmen, denn dabei beugt sich gewissermaßen das Gehirn wissbegierig über sich selbst. Geht das? Kann eine ursprünglich zur Analyse der unbelebten, bewusstlosen Natur entwickelte Methode jemals erklären, wie unser Gehirn Bewusstsein produziert? Muss nicht zwischen physikalisch-chemischen Hirnvorgängen und unserem sinnlichen Erleben von Farben, Schmerzen und Emotionen die notorische »Erklärungslücke« der Bewusstseinsforschung klaffen? Es kommt auf den Versuch an. Wer wissen will, was die Naturwissenschaft - konkret die Neurobiologie - bisher über die materielle Basis unseres bewussten Erlebens herausgebracht hat, sollte dieses Buch lesen. Christof Koch sucht empirisch nach den »neuronalen Korrelaten des Bewusstseins« (neuronal correlates of consciousness, NCCs) - dem kleinsten Satz neuronaler Ereignisse, der für eine bestimmte bewusste Wahrnehmung hinreichend ist. Gewiss vermag unser Gehirn noch viel mehr, als bloß Sinneserlebnisse zu vermitteln: Wir können sprechen, Erlebnisse reflektieren, zählen, logisch denken und so weiter. Das vergleichsweise bescheidene Projekt, NCCs für bewusste visuelle Wahrnehmung zu suchen, hat Koch gemeinsam mit Francis Crick, dem Mitentdecker des genetischen Codes, bis zu dessen Tod 2004 verfolgt, weil die beiden darin den einfachsten Zugang zum Rätsel des Bewusstseins sahen. Damit wiederholte Crick eine Vorgehensweise, mit der er schon 1953 erfolgreich war: zur Erforschung des bislang Unvorstellbaren zunächst ein möglichst einfaches Beispiel zu studieren. Bevor Crick zusammen mit James Watson die Struktur der DNA aufdeckte, konnten die Biologen sich nicht vorstellen, wie ein einzelnes Molekül die Information über den Aufbau eines lebenden Organismus enthalten sollte. Analog hofften später Crick und Koch, aus der Struktur der Neuronen und ihren Wechselwirkungen auf die physische Grundlage des Bewusstseins schließen zu können.
    Das ist kein Top-down-, sondern ein Bottom-up-Ansatz. Die Leistung, Bewusstsein hervorzurufen, wird nicht »holistisch« dem Gehirn als Ganzem oder größeren Hirnarealen zugeschrieben, sondern möglichst kleinen Ensembles spezifischer Neuronen, eben den NCCs. Koch hebt beispielsweise die Fähigkeit einzelner Neuronen hervor, selektiv auf ein bekanntes Gesicht anzusprechen. Er bestreitet nicht, dass »höhere« bewusste Leistungen - etwa das Erfassen von Dingkategorien - größere Areale beanspruchen; aber für die empirische Untersuchung der Hirnvorgänge bei einfachen Wahrnehmungen sucht er nach dem neuronalen Minimum. Dafür müssen die Versuchspersonen nicht unbedingt Menschen sein; auch Affen, denen im Experiment unterschiedliche Bilder für beide Augen dargeboten werden, richten ihre Aufmerksamkeit abwechselnd auf das eine oder andere Bild, und entsprechend variiert das - mit modernen Verfahren messbare - neuronale Erregungsmuster ihres Gehirns. So wird Bewusstsein zu einem Gegenstand empirischer Forschung im Tierversuch. Koch - der immer wieder betont, auch im Namen seines verstorbenen Mentors Crick zu schreiben - behauptet nicht, er könne mit den NCCs schon das Rätsel des Bewusstseins insgesamt lösen. Wohl aber beharrt er darauf, dass nur dieser Bottom-up-Ansatz den Weg zu einer Erklärung weist. Er skizziert ein langfristiges Forschungsprogramm, das, so hofft er, die Erklärungslücke zwischen objektiven Hirnprozessen und subjektivem Erleben schließen wird. Bewusstsein ist für Koch eine emergente Eigenschaft komplexer Nerventätigkeit. Darum würde er auch nicht zögern, einem hochkomplex verdrahteten und autonom agierenden Roboter eine Art Bewusstheit zuzugestehen. Das ungeheuer reichhaltige, elegant geschriebene und gut übersetzte Buch wendet sich eigentlich an zwei verschiedene Lesergruppen: Die einen wollen »nur« erfahren, was die modernste Naturwissenschaft über das Bewusstsein zu sagen weiß; die anderen finden ein komplettes Lehrbuch der Neurobiologie vor. Der Autor versucht, es beiden recht zu machen, indem er Details und Quellen in umfangreiche Fußnoten verbannt. Ein neugieriger Leser wird sich förmlich zwingen müssen, über das Kleingedruckte hinwegzulesen, welches das untere Drittel fast jeder Seite ausmacht."     Abstract
    The history of the Library of Congress Subject Headings is traced, from its beginnings with the implementation of a dictionary catalog at the Library of Congress in 1898 to the present day. The author describes the most significant changes which have occurred in LCSH policies and practices during the 100-year period. Events noted near the end of the century indicate an increased willingness on the part of' the Library of Congress to involve the larger library community in the creation or revision of subject headings and other decision-making regarding the LCSH system. Finally, the author provides a summary of the other contributions to this collection of essays, a collection which celebrates the "centennial" of the world's most popular library subject heading language

    Abstract
    Surveys conducted during the last four years under the auspices of the International Federation of Library Associations and Organizations (IFLA) reveal that the Library of Congress Subject Headings is heavily used in national libraries outside of the United States, particularly in English-speaking countries. Many other countries report using a translation or adaptation of LCSH as their principal subject heading language. Magda Heiner-Freiling presents an analysis of the IFLA data, which also includes information on the classification schemes used by the libraries and whether or not the libraries have produced a manual on the creation and application of subject headings. The paper concludes with an Appendix showing the complete data from the 88 national libraries that respond to the surveys

    Lecture given at the AIBM conference, Karlsruhe, Sep 95. The thesaurus appeared 1st in 1982, produced according to DIN standard 1463. This standard is largely adhered to, with 2 deviations: the controlled vocabulary is rather universal, covering more than 1 musical field, and descriptors are used as systematic collection points, with non-decriptors as subordinate headings. The 1994 edition has widened its contents range. There are still problems with ambiguity of headings and titles
