- Abstract
- The Library of Congress Subject Headings system, originally developed for the Library's own collection in the late nineteenth century, has been widely adopted and has been the de facto standard for subject cataloging in American libraries for nearly a century. Ironically, there has never been a written code to guide its initial formation or to direct its continuing development. Rules for descriptive cataloging have evolved through continuing efforts in revision. There are no comparable rules for subject cataloging. The concise book entitled Subject Headings: A Practical Guide (1951) by David Judson Haykin (1896-1958), Chief of the Subject Cataloging Division of the Library of Congress from 1941 to 1952, has come the closest to being an official pronouncement of the principles and practice of the Library of Congress Subject Headings system. The book offered a rationalization and an explanation of the Library of Congress practice as it was at the time. Many of the policies described in the book have since been changed, but the basic guidelines and principles set forth by Haykin are still valid today. The following excerpt is taken from the chapter entitled "Fundamental Concepts." Here, the influence of Charles A. Cutter's principles (q.v.) an the Library of Congress system is clearly discernible, although not officially acknowledged. The principles outlined by Haykin-focus an the user, the principle of uniform headings, the reliance an common usage, and the principle of specific and direct entry-echo those expounded by Cutter many years earlier. In his discussion of "the reader as the focus," Haykin reiterated Cutter's emphasis an the "convenience of the public" at the sacrifice of logic.

- Abstract
- Some of the advantages of the classed catalog were then reintroduced into the alphabetical subject catalog through see also references and, to some extent, by the use of inverted headings. Although never officially acknowledged, Cutter's principles provided the philosophical underpinnings for the Library of Congress and the Sears subject headings systems. His principles of common usage, specific entry, uniform heading, and syndetic structure have been reflected in the Library of Congress Subject Headings practice and reiterated by David Judson Haykin (q.v.) in his exposition of the Library of Congress system. Cutter's definition of "specific entry" has been frequently quoted as the basis of the alphabetical subject catalog. Because Cutter's Rules are no longer in print, the following excerpt contains all the rules an subject entry from the fourth edition of Rules for a Dictionary Catalog. These rules, first published over a hundred years ago, do not address all the problems encountered in subject analysis in modern times. Nonetheless, many of his ideas are still valid and manifested in subject cataloging practice in American libraries today. Moreover, as A. C. Foskett comments, "his Rules can still be read with profit (and, more unusual in such works, pleasure) today."

- Abstract
- The system is available both in print and online versions. Names a few new subject headings in areas like science, technology, engineering and medicine (STEM). In this edition, there are a total of 1,600 new headings making it a total of 12,000+ preferred headings meant for subject access in small and medium sized libraries. This unprecedented increase of about 1,600 headings is mostly due the complete incorporation of the Canadian Sears last published independently in 2006. Also critically examines inconsistencies in a few headings. Concludes to say the new edition in resplendent, hard binding maintains its stellar reputation of a handy list of general subject headings both for applications and a teaching resource.

- Abstract
- The history of the Library of Congress Subject Headings is traced, from its beginnings with the implementation of a dictionary catalog at the Library of Congress in 1898 to the present day. The author describes the most significant changes which have occurred in LCSH policies and practices during the 100-year period. Events noted near the end of the century indicate an increased willingness on the part of' the Library of Congress to involve the larger library community in the creation or revision of subject headings and other decision-making regarding the LCSH system. Finally, the author provides a summary of the other contributions to this collection of essays, a collection which celebrates the "centennial" of the world's most popular library subject heading language

- Abstract
- Surveys conducted during the last four years under the auspices of the International Federation of Library Associations and Organizations (IFLA) reveal that the Library of Congress Subject Headings is heavily used in national libraries outside of the United States, particularly in English-speaking countries. Many other countries report using a translation or adaptation of LCSH as their principal subject heading language. Magda Heiner-Freiling presents an analysis of the IFLA data, which also includes information on the classification schemes used by the libraries and whether or not the libraries have produced a manual on the creation and application of subject headings. The paper concludes with an Appendix showing the complete data from the 88 national libraries that respond to the surveys

- Abstract
- Lecture given at the AIBM conference, Karlsruhe, Sep 95. The thesaurus appeared 1st in 1982, produced according to DIN standard 1463. This standard is largely adhered to, with 2 deviations: the controlled vocabulary is rather universal, covering more than 1 musical field, and descriptors are used as systematic collection points, with non-decriptors as subordinate headings. The 1994 edition has widened its contents range. There are still problems with ambiguity of headings and titles
