    Abstract
    Das vorliegende Schwerpunktheft zeichnet eine aktuelle Bestandsaufnahme der Hildesheimer Informationswissenschaft. Im Vergleich zu anderen Standorten wie Konstanz, Saarbrücken, Regensburg ist die Informationswissenschaft in Hildesheim relativ "jung". Sie wurde zunächst von Christa Hauenschild und ab ihrer Berufung 1998 federführend von Christa Womser-Hacker aufgebaut und hat sich mittlerweile als Erfolgsmodell in Lehre und Forschung etabliert.

    Abstract
    Für manche ist das Internet Teufelszeug, andere sehen darin eine Art Heilsbringer, der endlich dafür sorgen werde, dass sich die Ideen von Gleichberechtigung, Demokratie und Menschenrechten verbreiten. Doch nüchtern betrachtet ist das globale Netz auch nur eine Infrastruktur oder - abstrakter noch - ein Werkzeug, das sich wie alle Werkzeuge für gute wie für schlechte Zwecke gebrauchen lässt. Nicht die Technik also wird, wenn überhaupt, erlösend wirken, sondern die Art, wie Menschen sie einsetzen. Was dies für qualitativ hochwertigen Journalismus bedeutet, ist Gegenstand der nachfolgenden Überlegungen.
