    Abstract
    Die Dokumentationsabteilung im Institut für Museumskunde der Staatlichen Museen Preußischer Kulturbesitz (IfM) hat die Aufgabe, bundesweit Museen und museale Einrichtungen bei der Einführung der Informationstechnik mit Rat und Tat zu unterstützen. Hierbei arbeitet sie mit dem Konrad-Zuse-Zentrum für Informationstechnik Berlin (ZIB) zusammen. Diese Aktivitäten liegen im Bereich einer professionell durchgeführten Rationalisierung; Computerisierung ist nicht Selbstzweck, sondern eine Möglichkeit, ohnehin durchzuführende Arbeiten in puncto Zeit und Kosten effizienter zu gestalten bzw. Dinge durchzuführen, für die man beim Einsatz konventioneller Methoden weder die Zeit noch das Geld hätte. Mit der Vermittlung der hierfür notwendigen Kenntnisse und Fertigkeiten ist ein kleines Institut wie das IfM wegen des rapide ansteigenden Beratungsbedarfs der Museen heute noch weit überfordert. Wir konzentrieren daher unsere Aktivitäten auf eine Zusammenarbeit mit den für die Museumsbetreuung zuständigen Einrichtungen in den Bundesländern. Wir haben die Hoffnung, daß mehr und mehr Bundesländer für diese Aufgabe eigene Dienstleistungsangebote entwickeln werden. Bevor das erreicht ist, versucht das HM interessierten Museen zumindest eine "Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe" anzubieten; auch wenn dieses oder jenes Bundesland noch nicht in der Lage ist, seine Museen auf diesem Gebiet professionell zu beraten, soll es einzelnen Museen zumindest erleichtert werden, sich hier selber schlau zu machen. Zum Inhalt: Zur Zeit der Großrechner waren sich noch alle Beteiligten darüber einig, daß man für den Einsatz der Informationstechnik professioneller Hilfe bedarf. Man war bereit, sich den Anforderungen der Maschine anzupassen, man versuchte, sich "computergerecht" zu verhalten. Die Einführung leicht zu bedienender und leistungsstarker Computer im Bürobereich hat diese Arbeitsbedingungen aber grundlegend verändert. Auch Leute, die von Computer noch nichts verstehen, können heute in wenigen Tagen lernen, mit Programmen für "Textverarbeitung" ganz selbstverständlich umzugehen. Sie erwarten daher, daß das bei einem Einsatz des Computers für die Inventarisierung genauso problemlos sei. Von einer solchen Benutzerfreundlichkeit der Programme sind wir im deutschen Museumswesen aber noch weit entfernt. Das hat einen einfachen Grund: In die eben erwähnten einfach zu handhabenden Programme wurde inzwischen hunderte oder gar tausende von "Mannjahren" investiert; ein erheblicher Teil dieser Mittel diente dazu, den Computer den spezifischen Bedürfnissen bestimmter Arbeitsplätze anzupassen, bzw. die daran arbeitenden Mitarbeiter auszubilden. Bis das auch für das Museum gilt, wird wohl noch einige Zeit vergehen; dieser Markt ist zu klein, als daß sich solche Investitionen auf rein kommerzieller Basis kurzfristig auszahlen könnten. Das Institut für Museumskunde versucht hier Hilfestellung zu geben. Das vorliegende Heft 33 der "Materialien" ist aus Beratungen und Kursen hervorgegangen. Es versucht, die für die Einführung der Informationstechnik im Museum unabdingbaren grundlegenden Computerkenntnisse für Museumsleute in Form eines Lern- und Lesebuchs zu vermitteln. Es schließt damit an Heft 30 (Jane Sunderland und Leonore Sarasan, Was muß man alles tun, um den Computer im Museum erfolgreich einzusetzen?) direkt an und soll zusammen mit ihm benutzt werden.

This standard is largely adhered to, with 2 deviations: the controlled vocabulary is rather universal, covering more than 1 musical field, and descriptors are used as systematic collection points, with non-decriptors as subordinate headings.     "Dieses Buch soll die menschliche Sprache rühmen und jenen Tribut zollen, die sie erforschen. Es soll die gewaltige Sprachenvielfalt auf der Welt ebenso vor Augen führen wie die Vielseitigkeit, Komplexität und Schönheit jeder einzelnen Sprache, ob sie nun von Millionen oder von Hunderten gesprochen wird - von den ausgefeiltesten Formulierungen der hohen Literatur bis hin zu den alltäglichsten Äußerungen. Gleichzeitig möchte ich ein wenig von der Faszination und dem Nutzen der Sprachforschung vermitteln, die unzählige allgemeine Erkenntnisse über Struktur, Entwicklung und Gebrauch von Sprache hervorgebracht und zu vielen wichtigen Anwendungen in individuellen wie sozialen Problembereichen geführt hat. Das Buch hat deshalb zwei Ebenen. Zum einen spiegelt es jenes Interesse für Sprachgeschichte und sprachliches Verhalten wider, dem wir täglich begegnen, wenn sich Menschen über die Herkunft einer Wortbedeutung Gedanken machen oder voller Staunen den ersten Sprechversuchen eines Kindes lauschen. Zum anderen reflektiert sich darin ein tieferes Interesse, das aus dem Bemühen entspringt, das Beobachtete zu erklären und Gesetzmäßigkeiten darin zu erkennen - ein Interesse, das darin münden kann, daß wir die Sprachforschung zu unserem Beruf machen oder eine Laufbahn im Sprachunterricht, der Sprachtherapie oder einem anderen sprachbezogenen Beruf einschlagen. Außerdem habe ich auch praktische Ziele. Ich hoffe, das Buch wird zu einem fundierten Bewußtsein über die Komplexität der menschlichen Sprache beitragen, die Aufmerksamkeit auf die vielfältigen sprachlich bedingten und sprachlich lösbaren Probleme lenken und deutlich machen, daß es sprachliche Rechte gibt, die nicht missachtet werden sollten. Vor mir liegt eine »Deklaration über die Sprachrechte des Individuums, für die Francisco Gomes de Matos von der Bundesuniversität Pernambuca im brasilianischen Recife eintritt. Der Appell verweist darauf, daß es überall auf der Welt sprachbezogene Vorurteile und Diskriminierung gibt, und er nennt auch die Hindernisse, die Menschen in den Weg gestellt werden, wenn sie besondere Hilfe beim Sprachenlernen und beim Sprachgebrauch suchen. Jeder Mensch hat das Recht auf den Gebrauch seiner Muttersprache, auf das Erlernen einer Zweitsprache, auf besondere Behandlung bei sprachlicher Behinderung - Rechte, die in vielen Teilen der Welt nicht oder nur unzureichend gewährleistet sind. Nur bei einem starken Interesse der Öffentlichkeit für solche Fragen haben diese Rechte eine Chance auf Anerkennung, und meine Hoffnung ist es, daß die Enzyklopädie zur Entstehung eines Klimas beitragen wird, in dem die Menschen sich der Bedeutung von Sprache für Individuum und Gesellschaft bewußt werden und entsprechend handeln. Die Bezeichnung "Enzyklopädie" verwende ich nicht ohne Vorbehalte: Gäbe es einen Ausdruck für "embryonale Enzyklopädie" so würde dieser das vorliegende Werk sicherlich treffender charakterisieren. Das Thema Sprache ist derart umfassend, daß es sich auf 478 Seiten im Grunde nur anreißen läßt. Mein persönlicher Hintergrund ist die Linguistik, und ich bin mir darüber im klaren, daß ich andere Bereiche des Wissens und der Forschung, etwa Philosophie, Psychologie und künstliche Intelligenz, nur unzureichend berücksichtigt habe. Zudem schreibe ich zwar aus Sicht eines Linguisten, doch ist das Buch nicht als Einführung in die Sprachwissenschaft angelegt: Ich habe auf eine Diskussion der zahlreichen sprachanalytischen Ansätze der Linguistik verzichtet und gehe nur auf wenige theoretische Unterschiede näher ein. Wer sich intensiver mit dem Thema befassen will, findet in den Quellenangaben hoffentlich reichlich Material."

    Discusses the theory and practice of subject headings, the principle and application of subject heading lists in various countries, and the present situation of the Chinese subject heading list in Taiwan.     Abstract
    Pauline Cochrane and Monika Kirtland's "Critical views of LCSH-Library of Congress Subject Headings: a bibliographic and bibliometric essay" published in 'Cataloging & classification quarterly 1(1982) S.71-93' has been widely cited as a source for discussion and complaints about LCSH. Cochrane and Kirtland cover the literature from 1944-1979. The present work provides a critique of the Cochrane/Kirtland study and a survey of the literature concerning the LCSHs during the 1980s. The classified bibliography is arranged according to the format of the Cochrane/Kirtland study to facilitate comparison. Criticism of LCSH reiterates the same points over and over again, whether it is sparseness, bias or currency of the subject headings. Significant trends which emerged in the 1980s include an increased emphasis on the use of LCSH as an online searching tool, concern for the syndetic structure of LCSH and the role of subdivisions, as well as repeated calls for the development of coherent standards to ensure LCSH evolves and is applied in a consistent manner

    The DIMDI undertook a translation of NLM's MeSH, the machine-readable version is available from DIMDI. The thesaurus contains 18.000 subject headings in medicine and related fields. It is arranged: 1) alphabetically and 2) hierarchically. Both arrangements have a main list with the main subject headings only in German and two lists with German-English and English-German subject headings
