    Abstract
Describes the role of the Library of Congress (LoC) in leading cooperative initiatives to overcome the crisis in cataloguing borught about by cuts in cataloguing departments. With the aim of making bibliographic control better, faster, and cheaper the LoC invited experts to discussions from which emerged the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC). Officially established in 1995, the PCC is a coalition of libraries working to increase the availability of unique records created to agreed standards. Membership now exceeds 200. Participants can join programmes for name and series authorities, subject-headings-classification proposals and contribute bibliographic records to BIBCO. Explains the democratic structure of the coalition and assesses the achievements of the LoC and PCC in pursuit of the various goals. Reviews the accomplishment of the Cooperative Online Serials Program and international ventures, involving Canada, UK, Australia and New Zealand and lists the benefits of participation in cooperative endeavours

    Abstract
The network structure of a hyperlinked environment can be a rich source of information about the content of the environment, provided we have effective means for understanding it. We develop a set of algorithmic tools for extracting information from the link structures of such environments, and report on experiments that demonstrate their effectiveness in a variety of contexts on the World Wide Web. The central issue we address within our framework is the distillation of broad search topics, through the discovery of "authoritative" information sources on such topics. We propose and test an algorithmic formulation of the notion of authority, based on the relationship between a set of relevant authoritative pages and the set of "hub pages" that join them together in the link structure. Our formulation has connections to the eigenvectors of certain matrices associated with the link graph; these connections in turn motivate additional heuristics for link-based analysis.

    Abstract
Reports on the experimental test of several causes of user errors while composing database queries. The query language under consideration is SQL. A query writing model was developed that integrated a GOMS type analysis of query writing with the characterisitcs of human cognition. This model revealed multiple cognitive causes of a frequent and troublesome error, join clause omission. This semantic user error returns answers from the database that may undetectably wrong, affecting users, decision makers, and programmers. The model predicted 4 possible causes of join clause omission, and empirical testing revealed that all 4 contributed to the error. Gives reasons why the frequency of this error increased. These results are significant for understanding user errors in general and for the developing new interfaces and training schemes for the task of writing database queries

    Abstract
Lecture given at the AIBM conference, Karlsruhe, Sep 95. The thesaurus appeared 1st in 1982, produced according to DIN standard 1463. This standard is largely adhered to, with 2 deviations: the controlled vocabulary is rather universal, covering more than 1 musical field, and descriptors are used as systematic collection points, with non-decriptors as subordinate headings. The 1994 edition has widened its contents range. There are still problems with ambiguity of headings and titles

    Abstract
Reports the rapid growth in usage of the Usenet on Internet: a means by which users can join in and gain access to a massive range of discussion groups on topics of interest. Notes the strength of the Usenet in there not being any central Usenet authority but in the way in which users can start up user groups with a minimum of effort. Traces the growth of the Usenet software from its origins in the 70s to the present

    Abstract
In October 1997, the CONSER Program will join the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC). Hirons and Schottlaender discuss the developments that led up to the consolidation, the new vision for the combined program as expressed in a set of principles, and the benefits to each program. They also examine the potential for change in CONSER and PCC inherent in the acceptance of the principles.

    Abstract
UNIMARC is widely used in French libraries for internal cataloguing, but in versions that differ significantly from the official IFLA form, while the BNF uses its own version for exporting bibliographic information. This situation has in part been created by software suppliers who produce modified versions for small libraries but without precisely detailing the variations. Problems will inevitably arise when such libraries change software or join cataloguing networks

    Abstract
Spansih subject headings can be used when searching ILLINET Online. Although Spanish language Bilindex subject headings have been available for more than a decade, the library literature has virtually ignored their existence. Provides a brief introduction to these headings, identifies several Illinois libraries which currently assign them, and presents some examples. Surveys various prospects and problems associated with their use
